Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The eponymous protagonist of this 1939 western, his brother and their gang started by robbing trains and graduated to banks, and have often been portrayed as folk heroes rather than outlaws. Many movies have been made about the exploits of this man, played in this instance by Tyrone Power. Who is he?

Answer: Jesse James

The 1939 movie "Jesse James" was very pro-Jesse and Frank James, blaming the railroad for doing them wrong and turning them into outlaws. This movie was followed the next year by "The Return of Frank James" in which Henry Fonda again played Jesse's brother, this time seeking revenge for the murder of Jesse.
2. The "3 Godfathers" in John Ford's 1948 movie were in fact bank robbers on the run from a posse out to get them "dead or alive". Which actor portrayed the youngest of the three, who had been wounded during their getaway?

Answer: Harry Carey, Jr.

The three robbers, played by Carey, Armendariz and Wayne, found a woman in the desert who died shortly after giving birth to a son. Before she died she made all three of them godfathers to the boy, who they promised to look after. Ward Bond played the leader of the posse that was trying to catch them.

Although Carey had already made several films, this was his first starring role, and his billing was "Introducing Harry Carey, Jr.". The son of western star Harry Carey (1878-1947), Harry Jr. passed away in 2012 aged 91.
3. The bank robbers of the 1954 movie "The Raid" were not outlaws, but Confederate soldiers, who were intent on taking the Civil War to a small town in Vermont. Who played the group's leader, who posed as a Canadian whilst he reconnoitred the town?

Answer: Van Heflin

The movie was based on an actual incident in the American Civil War, but introduced a love interest for Heflin's character, Major Neal Benton, in the person of the widow Katy Bishop (Anne Bancroft). Peter Graves and Lee Marvin played Confederate officers, the latter a hothead who nearly ruined their plans. Boone played a wounded Union officer and long-time friend of Widow Bishop.

Other notable roles for Heflin were the father in "Shane" and the USMC commanding officer in "Battle Cry", as well as the Christian Bale role in original "3:10 to Yuma".
4. The bank robbers of 1955's "The Ladykillers", a classic Ealing Studios comedy, were led by Alec Guinness and included Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom. What did the gang pretend to be to keep their landlady in the dark as to their real plans?

Answer: Classical musicians

The ruse was accomplished by playing a record of a classical piece to simulate practice sessions. When it became necessary to eliminate the old lady, things went wrong for the gang in a comedic manner and their plans failed to work out.

The 2004 remake cast Tom Hanks in the Guinness role, changed the bank to a casino and moved the action from London, England, to Mississippi.
5. "The Day They Robbed the Bank of England" (1960) was based on a novel by John Brophy, and portrayed the robbers as Irish rebels who were after the gold kept in the bank's vault. How did they plan to get to the gold?

Answer: Through the sewer

The early twentieth century Irish rebels were led by the very American Charles Norgate (Aldo Ray) in this film made in England by MGM's British studio. An old sewer underneath the vault was discovered to be the bank's weak spot, and the gang planned their operation accordingly.
6. In the 1966 comedy "Penelope", the title character was the bank robber, but nobody believed it was her. What was her connection to the bank that she robbed?

Answer: Banker's wife

Neglected by her rising star banker husband (Ian Bannen), Penelope (Natalie Wood) disguised herself and held up his bank for a large amount of money. Confusion, confession and other mayhem followed with the husband standing by his decision not to press charges in the end. Dick Shawn and Peter Falk also appeared.
7. Remember "Bonnie and Clyde"? They weren't the only people who robbed banks in that 1967 movie. Which of the following did *not* play a member of their gang?

Answer: Gene Wilder

In his first movie role, Wilder played a young man who was victimised by the Barrow gang. Hackman played Clyde's brother Buck, Parsons was Buck's wife Blanche and Pollard played driver/mechanic C.W. Moss. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway starred as the title couple.
8. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" were wanted for robbing both banks and trains in this 1969 movie starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. What language did they try to learn near the end of the film which allowed them to continue their bank robbing ways in a new location?

Answer: Spanish

After they had been chased all over the western USA, the two decided to start over in Bolivia. Butch had some useful Spanish phrases written on a card, but his victims were way ahead of him putting up their hands and lining up by the wall before he was able to tell them to do so.
9. "The Long Riders" (1980) was a sympathetic retelling of the story of Jesse James that used real sets of brothers to play members of his gang. Which acting brothers played the bank robbing James brothers?

Answer: Keach

James Keach played Jesse James and Stacy Keach played brother Frank. The Carradines (David, Keith and Robert) played the Younger brothers. Dennis and Randy Quaid played Ed and Clell Miller. Charlie and Bob Ford were played by Christopher and Nicholas Guest. Once again the James brothers were portrayed as basically good guys who were forced into robbery by circumstances.
10. In 1991, "Point Break" took viewers from bank robbery to the world of surfing, where one FBI agent thought the robbers might be hiding. What name was given to the gang?

Answer: The Ex-Presidents

The name was given to the gang because they wore rubber masks of Reagan, Carter, Nixon and Lyndon Johnson when committing their crimes. Keanu Reeves played the young FBI agent who went undercover to try to prove the theory proposed by his partner (Gary Busey). Patrick Swayze played one of the suspected surfers.
