Were You Moved By 'Howl's Castle'? Quiz

Answer: A steam train

An old-fashioned steam train, billowing smoke, goes past Sophie's window at the beginning. When Howl redecorates the castle and Sophie ends up in a room similar to her hat shop working room, it goes past again. At the start, we can see Howl's castle in the distance but it doesn't actually go past the window.

Answer: Mouse

The soldiers try and chat Sophie up but she just wants to get around them. They call her "mouse" because she's being quiet. Just as she starts losing her temper with them, Howl arrives. He casts a spell and sends the soldiers marching away. He then tells Sophie that he's being chased and when the monsters appear, he and Sophie escape by flying up into the air.

Answer: The tackiest thing here

The Witch of the Waste thinks of herself as beautiful and is very scornful of Sophie's hat shop, calling everything in it "tacky". She knows that Sophie has recently met Howl and wants to know where he is.
Sophie, who doesn't even realise it was Howl she met in the first place, gets understandably angry and demands that the Witch leave. She does, but not before putting a spell on Sophie that changes her into an old woman. How mean!

Answer: A bird

The scarecrow, or "Turnip Head" as Sophie likes to call him, brings her a walking stick with a handle that looks like a duck's head. This is just what she needs as, being an old woman now, she's finding it hard to climb up the hill. Turnip Head pops up all over the place during the film.

Initially, Sophie tries to get rid of him by sending him off to find her a place to stay, but he returns with Howl's moving castle! It seems that he too has a spell on him.

Answer: Jenkins and Pendragon

These are just two of Howl's aliases. When Sophie asks how many he has, he replies "as many as I need to keep my freedom". He gets in a bit of a fix when both wizards are requested to report to the Palace! Sophie ends up going in his place, as his mother, Mrs. Pendragon!

Answer: Another 2 pieces of bacon and 6 eggs

They sure can eat a lot of food! Calcifer, the fire demon, controls the moving of the castle and all the every day things, like heating water. Howl is the only person he obeys so Markl is just used to having bread and cheese as Howl is often away. Sophie soon sorts Calcifer out with some straight talking, leaving Howl and Markl very impressed.

Answer: Blue

He also grows a super-fast beard and puts on a deep voice as he's only a child. It's quite funny when he goes grocery shopping with Sophie, all he does is say "I hate potatoes", "I hate fish", in his old man voice.

Answer: Beautiful

His hair goes darker quite soon afterwards so it's not the end of the world. I actually thought Howl was pretty sexy for an animation! Sophie gets very upset when Howl says this and rushes outside saying she'd never been beautiful in her whole life. Howl then says that he thinks she's beautiful. Aaah!

Answer: Howl's childhood

She sees how Calcifer and Howl made their bargain when Howl was younger and understands that to help them both she needs to return Howl's heart to his body. Calcifer had been keeping Howl's heart for him which had ended up enslaving them both. She starts falling back through the portal, so she shouts at them to find her in the future. Which they do.

Answer: Heen the dog

Heen takes a liking to Sophie from the start and follows her as a loyal friend. He only reports back to his mistress, Madam Suliman, at the very end, when all the spells are broken and the missing Prince (Turnip Head) is restored to his true self. With his return, the war, which started because he went missing, can finally end.
