As the film was set in the 1950s there was a standard building code that no building was allowed to be taller than city hall; the cameras were placed at certain positions so that the taller buildings could not be seen. Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, both Australians, lived in Los Angeles for a few months before shooting commenced, so they could get a feel for the place. In this movie another Australian, Simon Baker, made his film debut. He went on later to star in the TV show "The Mentalist". The body count in this movie is 30.

When Steven Spielberg was looking for an unknown actor for the role of Private Ryan, he selected Matt Damon for his "All-American look", little realising that Damon would go on to win an Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" (1997). Both Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford were considered for the role of Captain John Miller, before Tom Hanks was cast in that role. This was the highest grossing film in 1998.

The film won an Academy Award and two BAFTA Awards. In preparation for his role, Daniel Day-Lewis lived in the wilderness for several months, where he hunted, fished and lived off the land. In the original novel Hawkeye's name was "Natty Bumppo". This was the second version of James Fennemore Cooper's book, the earlier film being made in 1936 and starring Randolph Scott as Hawkeye.
