"L.A. Confidential" stars Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito and David Strathairn. The movie is about three very different police officers, one the son of a legendary LAPD Detective trying to live up to his father's reputation, the second a plainclothes detective whose aim is punishing men who beat women, and the third is a drug squad officer who lends his experiences to a TV police drama.

As the film was set in the 1950s there was a standard building code that no building was allowed to be taller than city hall; the cameras were placed at certain positions so that the taller buildings could not be seen. Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, both Australians, lived in Los Angeles for a few months before shooting commenced, so they could get a feel for the place. In this movie another Australian, Simon Baker, made his film debut. He went on later to star in the TV show "The Mentalist". The body count in this movie is 30.

When Steven Spielberg was looking for an unknown actor for the role of Private Ryan, he selected Matt Damon for his "All-American look", little realising that Damon would go on to win an Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" (1997). Both Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford were considered for the role of Captain John Miller, before Tom Hanks was cast in that role. This was the highest grossing film in 1998.

"The Fisher King" stars Jeff Bridges as Jack and Robin Williams as Parry. The on-air comments of shock jock Jack lead to a caller committing a mass-murder/suicide in a Manhattan restaurant. The events cause Jack to become suicidal and very despondent. Whilst drunk one night he is set upon by thugs. His rescuer is Parry, a delusional man who is on a mission to find the Holy Grail. Jack learns that Parry, an ex-professor, is in this condition because his wife was one of those massacred at the restaurant. So he sets out to help Parry.

Terry Gilliam was the director of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". This was Gilliam's first movie he directed without Monty Python.

"Philadelphia" stars Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett and Denzel Washington as Joe Miller. It also features Robert Maxwell, Joanne Woodward and Jason Robards, among others. Gay lawyer Andrew Beckett is fired from his law firm because he has contracted AIDS. He hires homophobic lawyer, Joe Miller, and sues his ex-law firm.

At the same time, a Major in the British army has been sent to Albany to serve under a Colonel and to escort the Colonel's two daughters to the fort to join their father. Their guide leads them all into an ambush but the women are saved by the arrival of the Mohican and his two sons.

The film won an Academy Award and two BAFTA Awards. In preparation for his role, Daniel Day-Lewis lived in the wilderness for several months, where he hunted, fished and lived off the land. In the original novel Hawkeye's name was "Natty Bumppo". This was the second version of James Fennemore Cooper's book, the earlier film being made in 1936 and starring Randolph Scott as Hawkeye.
