Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I worked as a reporter and got promoted to being a columnist. Who played me?

Answer: Owen Wilson

Wilson, born on November 18th, 1968 in Dallas, Texas, was cast as John Grogan. John was married to his longtime sweetheart, Jenny, and they worked at competing newspapers. John was a reporter but his boss gave him a promotion to being a columnist. John did not think he would like the columnist position at first but he ended up having a lot of fun with his columns.

When John first took Marley home, he made Marley sleep in the garage but then took Marley into his room since Marley whined too much. At the end of the movie, John was with Marley right before he was euthanized and told him to not believe him for all the times he said he was the world's worst dog. Wilson was in the films "The Cable Guy", "Armageddon" and "Shanghai Noon".
2. When Marley was put down, I put my necklace in his grave. Who played me?

Answer: Jennifer Aniston

Aniston, a native of Sherman Oaks, California, landed the part of Jenny Grogan. When Jenny first saw Marley, she fell in love with him but she did not know what name to give him. She decided at first to just call him "Clearance Puppy" since he was the cheapest dog of all the puppies they saw at a breeder's house.

When Jenny was first pregnant, she went to get a sonogram but there was no heartbeat and she miscarried. At one point in the movie, Jenny was getting very cranky and it was suggested she had post partum depression.

When John took Marley to the vet for the last time to have him put to sleep, Jenny was seen crying. Aniston guest starred on the TV series "30 Rock" and "Quantum Leap". She is best known for portraying Rachel Green on the comedy series "Friends".
3. I was John's co-worker and watched over Marley for a couple of days. Who played me?

Answer: Eric Dane

Dane, born in 1972 in San Francisco, California, portrayed Sebastian. Sebastian worked with John at a newspaper in Florida and the boss did not like him as much and only kept him on since he was a great writer. When John and Jenny had problems with Marley, John asked Sebastian if he could watch Marley. Sebastian said he would but that it would only be for a couple of days. Sebastian informed John he was relocating to New York City since he got a job with "The New York Times".

When John was in Philadelphia one day, he ran into Sebastian and they had a nice reunion. Dane had parts in the movies "X-Men: The Last Stand", "Feast", and "The Basket".

He is best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on the TV series "Grey's Anatomy".
4. As Marley's veterinarian, I put him to sleep. Who played me?

Answer: Ann Dowd

Dowd played Dr. Platt in "Marley and Me". When the Grogan family moved to Pennsylvania, they had Dr. Platt as Marley's veterinarian. Marley was having problems with climbing the stairs so John took him to see Dr. Platt. She told John that Marley's stomach turned and that she managed to get it unturned but that it would likely happen again. Dr. Platt informed John of all his options, like surgery, but also said that Marley may not survive surgery due to age. Near the end of the movie, Dr. Platt gave John the dire news that Marley's health had really deteriorated and that she could not get his stomach unturned again. John told Dr. Platt it was time to put Marley to sleep and Dr. Platt assured John that Marley would not feel any pain while being put down. Dowd guest starred on the TV shows "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit", "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" and "House M.D."
5. I promoted John at the newspaper where he worked at in Florida. Who played me?

Answer: Alan Arkin

Arkin, born on March 26th, 1934 in New York City, landed the part of Arnie Klein. Mr. Klein was the editor at the newspaper in Florida where John worked. Klein told John he should be a columnist and said that John could set his own hours and get paid double his salary in that position.

When John went to Arnie to talk to him about the emotional problems Jenny had, Arnie replied that perhaps she had post partum depression. When John got a job with "The Philadelphia Inquirer", Arnie wished him much luck. Arkin acted in the films "Jakob the Liar", "Gattaca" and "Grosse Point Blank".

In 2007, Arkin won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film "Little Miss Sunshine". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were Djimon Hounsou for "Blood Diamond", Eddie Murphy for "Dreamgirls", Jackie Earle Haley for "Little Children" and Mark Wahlberg for "The Departed".
6. I kicked Marley out of obedience school. Who played me?

Answer: Kathleen Turner

Turner, a native of Springfield, Missouri, had the small role of Ms. Kornblut. Ms. Kornblut operated an obedience school and John and Jenny took Marley to her to get him better trained. She told both John and Jenny that Marley could only have one master at the training and Jenny decided she would be Marley's master.

When Ms. Kornblut told all the dogs to sit, Marley leaped on Jenny's chest and started playing on the ground. Ms. Kornblut told all the dog owners in the class that Marley was an example of an alpha male dog that could never be happy.

When Marley ran off, Ms. Kornblut blew her whistle and Marley ran towards her and knocked her down. Ms. Kornblut told John and Jenny to not bring Marley back to her obedience school. Turner had guest starring stints on the TV series "Nip/Tuck", "Friends" and "Law and Order".

While the movie showed Marley being put to sleep, Patrick was seen watching a recorded video of many fun times he spent with Marley. At the very end of the movie, he put a note in Marley's grave and just said that Marley knew what it would mean. Gamble was in the films "The Dark Knight", "Babel" and "The Mist".
8. I was the youngest child of John and Jenny Grogan at five years of age. Who played me?

Answer: Lucy Merriam

Merriam was cast as a five year old Colleen. Colleen had a few scenes with Marley and was shown in a photo as having worn a ladybug outfit for her school's Halloween party. According to John, Colleen did not get out of the costume for an entire month.

When Colleen saw Marley for the last time, she asked her mom and dad if he was feeling sick. They explained to Colleen they would take Marley to the vet to see if she could make him better. At the very end of the film, Colleen put a note in Marley's grave and assured Marley she would never forget him. Merriam's first acting credit was when she originated the role of Emma Lavery on the ABC soap opera "All My Children" in 2006.

Answer: Clarke Peters

Peters, born on April 7th, 1952 in New York City, was cast for the small role of the editor of "The Philadelphia Inquirer". At that newspaper, John went back to being a reporter and the editor told John he wanted to make sure he did not put himself in the news story but to report it. John asked the editor if he would consider having John be a columnist for the paper and the editor said he would think about it. John assured Lisa that she would be all right and the police and paramedics were on their way. John introduced Lisa to Marley and Marley made sure Lisa was safe. Lisa ended up surviving the stab wound. Bennett had parts in the films "Music and Lyrics", "College" and "The Haunting of Molly Hartley".
