At the film's climax, they try to persuade Willis's doctor to take the potion as well, ensuring he will always be around to repair their bodies, but he wisely refuses and escapes.

"Pulp Fiction" was directed by Quentin Tarantino and is widely regarded as his masterpiece, and one of the best films of the 1990s. Bruce Willis plays Bruce Coolidge, a boxer who is bribed by Marcellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) to throw a fight, but chooses to win instead, and do a runner with the money that he was supposed to use to bet against himself. Needless to say, things don't go entirely to plan.

Uma Thurman plays Mia Wallace, wife of Marcellus, who in a famous sequence is taken to dinner by John Travolta's hitman, Vincent Vega, where they win a dance contest. Harvey Keitel plays Winston Wolfe, a "fixer" who helps Vincent and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) when they accidentally (and very bloodily) shoot a young man in their car.

In the film, the third in the "Die Hard" series, English actor Jeremy Irons plays a character known initially as "Simon", but who turns out to be the brother of Hans Gruber, the terrorist killed by John McClane at the end of the original "Die Hard" film. He is seeking revenge and does so by requiring Willis's McClane to solve a series of puzzles in order to prevent various terrorist atrocities.

Samuel L. Jackson also stars alongside Willis, as an initially antagonistic and unwilling accomplice forced by "Simon" to work with McClane to solve the puzzles. Needless to say, McClane kills "Simon" in the film's climax.

"Twelve Monkeys" is another of those films which gives Bruce Willis a chance to extend his acting talents. In the year 2035, in a world where the human race has been largely wiped out by a deadly virus, Willis plays James Cole, who is sent back in time in an attempt to prevent the virus from being released. Placed in a mental hospital by doctors who (reasonably enough) refuse to believe his story about a deadly virus, he meets Jeffrey Goines, an environmentalist played by Brad Pitt. The film ends bleakly, with Cole being shot dead while failing to prevent the virus being released.

When Pitt was cast, he was relatively unknown, but (because of various delays) by the time the film was released he had become famous through his roles in "Interview With the Vampire", "Legends of the Fall" and "Seven", all of which came out first.

In Luc Besson's wonderfully crazy science-fiction film, Bruce Willis plays Korben Dallas, a taxi-driver in 23rd-century New York, who becomes involved in a quest to save the human race from a giant fireball when a scantily clad girl named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) falls through the roof of his cab.

Gary Oldman overacts entertainingly in the role of Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, a human businessman who is in league with the evil fireball. "Mercury Rising" is a routine thriller, directed by Harold Becker, in which Bruce Willis plays Art Jeffries, an FBI agent who finds himself protecting a nine-year-old autistic boy who has unwittingly decoded a top-secret government cypher. Alec Baldwin plays Nick Kudrow, the National Security Agency (NSA) chief who decides this makes the boy and his parents a security threat and decides to have them killed. Although the parents are successfully murdered, Bruce saves the boy, and after much chasing around the film ends with the deaths of Kudrow and his corrupt colleagues.

Just when you think Bruce Willis can only do popcorn action movies, he surprises you with a subtle, sensitive performance like this. In M. Night Shyamalan's supernatural thriller, he plays a child psychologist who finds himself working with a boy who claims to be able to see the ghosts of people who don't realise they are dead. Haley Joel Osment won much praise for his performance as the boy, Cole Sear, and the film was a huge surprise hit, not least because of its concluding twist (which I won't give away here, just in case you haven't seen it yet).

Matthew Perry may still be best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the US sitcom "Friends" (1994-2004), but he also found time to star alongside Bruce Willis in this undemanding crime comedy. Perry plays Nicholas Oseransky, a dull but amiable dentist living in Quebec, who discovers that his new neighbour (played by Willis) is a Chicago mobster with a price on his head. Perry's unlikable wife persuades him to fly to Chicago and reveal to the mob Willis's location, in return for the reward money. Needless to say, things don't go according to plan.

Dame Helen Mirren was clearly having a whale of a time in this film, playing ex-CIA agent Victoria Winslow alongside Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as three other ex-CIA operatives. The four of them get back together to uncover a dastardly plot by the US Vice-President to cover up a historic war crime he committed while serving in the Army in Guatemala.

Dames Judi Dench and Vanessa Redgrave both acted in films that were part of popular action franchises: Judi as "M" in eight James Bond films, and Vanessa in the first "Mission Impossible" (1996). Dame Joan Collins is perhaps best known for her performance as Alexis Colby in the TV series "Dynasty" throughout the 1980s, although she has also appeared in dozens of films during a career spanning eight decades.
