"Zulu" was a true story that rocketed Michael Caine to stardom in 1964. The British army had just lost a huge battle against the Zulus at Isandlhwana, South Africa, in 1879. Something like four thousand Zulus then marched against a small missionary outpost at Rorke's Drift where around 150 Welsh infantrymen were stationed, many of them in hospital.

A young Lieutenant, Gonville Bromhead (played by Michael), who was inexperienced in battle, found himself in command of the British soldiers. The Zulus attacked the outpost several times but the defences held.

The battle went into a second day until it grew quiet around 2a.m. The defenders were exhausted and running out of ammunition when the Zulus returned shortly after dawn. Instead of attacking, they saluted the defenders and left the battleground. Eleven Victoria Crosses, (the highest award that can be awarded in the British army), were won that day.

Sam Spade (played by Humphrey Bogart}, is one half of a detective agency called Spade and Archer. One day, a beautiful woman, called Miss Wonderly comes to their office and by the evening, Sam's partner Miles is dead and also two other dangerous men.

It seems clear that Miss Wonderly needs protection which Sam agrees to provide. Several murders follow and they are all down to the hunt for a statuette of a bird. Warner Brothers were delighted at the success of "The Maltese Falcon" and wanted to make a sequel but Dashiell Hammett who wrote the novel of the same name advised Warner Brothers that while they had purchased the rights to that story, they had not bought the rights to the character of Sam and he was not giving them permission to use him in the new film. "Three Strangers" was eventually made using different characters.

Answer: Anastasia

Ingrid Bergman won the 1957 Best Actress in a Leading role Oscar for her performance in "Anastasia". She played a destitute girl who is groomed by Russian exiles in Paris to help in their plans to collect millions of pounds from the Bank of England by convincing them that the girl is Grand Duchess Anastasia, heir to the Russian throne. The man coaching her to assume the identity of Anastasia starts to believe she is the real thing.

Fred Astaire was a hugely successful dancer who made ten films with his partner Ginger Rogers. In "Top Hat", he plays a showman who has created a new dance routine. He shows it to the producer of the show late one night and manages to wake a sleeping lady, much to her annoyance.

She complains to the producer and the two antagonists find that they are actually very attracted to each other.

Sharon Stone is most famous for her role in "Basic Instinct". It tells the story of a detective investigating the death of a rock star. He is absolutely convinced the murderer is the star's girlfriend (played by Sharon), even though he can't find any evidence. As the body count increases, he is forced to question his theory.

Answer: Yankee Doodle Dandy

James Cagney was often cast as a villain. He did have a soft side though. He was an accomplished dancer as evidenced by his performance in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for which he won his only Best Actor Oscar. The film was about the life of the renowned musical composer, playwright, actor, dancer, and singer George M. Cohan. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was the first film to be colourised on its re-release.

Marilyn Monroe plays a showgirl called Lorelei who, with her friend Dorothy, (played by Jane Russell), travels to Paris pursued by a detective hired by her fiancé's suspicious father. He may have good reason as Lorelei and Dorothy are enjoying the company of eligible men they meet on the journey.

Answer: High Noon

Gary Cooper won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for his performance in "High Noon". Gary plays Marshal Will Kane who is about to get married when news arrives that a violent criminal he put in prison some years ago is returning to the town with his gang on the noon train.

He is seeking revenge. When Kane asks the townspeople to help him, they all make excuses and leave him to face the gang on his own.

Answer: Bend it Like Beckham

In "Bend it Like Beckham", Keira Knightley plays Jules, a white girl who plays football in a local women's league. Parminder Nagra plays Jess, the daughter of a Sikh family. She is a naturally gifted football player but her parents won't allow her to play. When Jules discovers Jess's talent, she encourages her to follow her dream. When Jess's parents discover she has been playing against their wishes, she has to reconcile her parents' wishes and her own ambition.

In "Where Eagle Dare", a film set in World War II, Richard Burton plays the leader of a crack commando team sent into Germany to rescue an American Brigadier General, the only survivor of a plane shot down by the Germans. The General knows the details of the upcoming D-Day invasion and the decision has been taken to make sure the he does not reveal the plans one way or another. Clint Eastwood plays a member of the team who soon starts to think something is amiss.
