Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Walk through each step of a relationship between Alvy Singer and his new flame played by Diane Keaton.

Answer: Annie Hall

This light-hearted look at a relationship that starts with Alvy and Annie meeting in the queue for a show, stepping into flirting, a glass of wine, a kiss, sex, moving in together, the break-up, the moping and then a reconciliation (of sorts) is, arguably, the best film that Woody Allen has put together.

In typical Woody fashion there's misery here, lots of it, but it is beautifully balanced by humour built on sarcasm and some outstanding performances, especially that of Diane Keaton. This 1977 film would win four Oscars, including gongs for Best Picture and Best Actress.
2. A husband and wife seek a divorce but when neither of them wants to give up the house it turns nasty.

Answer: The War of the Roses

After years of being in love with her husband, Oliver Rose (Michael Douglas), Barbara Rose (Kathleen Turner) is now growing restless and has come to dislike his controlling ways. Oliver, a highly successful lawyer, cannot see his own faults. Their marriage deteriorates rapidly and Barbara seeks a divorce but the break-up soon descends into farce as the whole argument boils down to who gets what, in particular, the mansion and all the contents within.

This 1989 film sees the third gathering of Douglas, Turner and Danny DeVito who'd all previous combined so well in "Romancing the Stone" (1984) and "Jewel of the Nile" (1985).
3. Roseanne Barr exacts revenge on her husband who's left her for a more attractive woman.

Answer: She-Devil

Ruth Patchett (Roseanne Barr) tries everything to please her husband. Her husband, Bob (Ed Begley Jr.), however, has had his head spun by Mary (Meryl Streep), a pretty and successful romance novelist. Bob starts an affair with Mary and then walks out on Ruth. In the process though, he lets Ruth know that his four main assets are his home, his family, his career and his freedom. Ruth sets about destroying all four of Bob's assets.

The film, released in 1989, received strong reviews for the excellent performances of its two leading ladies but was criticized for the dark tones that it presented.
4. A trio of TV journalists struggle with their own ambitions as well as their romantic frustrations.

Answer: Broadcast News

Holly Hunter is Jane Craig; talented, neurotic and a woman whose life revolves around her work. Albert Brooks, as Aaron Altman, is a gifted reporter who wants air time and is in love with Jane. William Hurt is Tom Grunick who is an anchorman who wants to be taken seriously but has only been hired for his looks. He also has designs on Jane but is scared off, to some extent, by her strength and intensity. Tom gets his foot in the door with Jane but blows it with an unethical news scoop. Aaron admits his love to Jane, gets a chance at air time but blows it and takes a job offer in another state. Jane blows it chooses not to follow Aaron and finds herself without either of the men.

This 1987 comedy was met with solid reviews, a good box office response and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
5. After her husband leaves her, a woman goes through a period of self-actualization.

Answer: An Unmarried Woman

Erica Benton (Jill Clayburgh) has it all. Married and wealthy, her world falls apart when her husband, Martin (Michael Murphy) walks out on her for a younger woman. Learning to cope with being single is, initially, difficult for Erica and she goes through bouts of confusion and rage. However, she begins to touch base with old and new friends and finds a new form of liberation within herself.

Paul Mazursky beautifully guides this 1978 film, which belongs to Clayburgh. Jill was rightfully acknowledged for this with a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards but lost out to Jane Fonda.
6. A Polish immigrant, humiliatingly divorced, schemes to win his wife back only to frame her for murder.

Answer: Three Colours: White

Released in 1994 this is the second film in Krzysztof Kieoelowski's "Three Colours" trilogy. Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is in a bind. The court agrees to his wife's, Dominique (Julie Delpy), request for a divorce because she doesn't love him anymore and he was unable to consummate their marriage. Karol also loses his sole means of support, a beauty salon owned jointly with Dominique, his French residency and, through misadventure, his savings.

He is left a beggar. Here begins his rise out of the gutter toward a new fortune and, in the process, he devises a scheme to win back Dominque.

After winning her back he fakes his own death and frames Dominque for his murder. Thank heavens that this is a comedy.
7. An estranged couple wipe out their memories of the other and then start dating again.

Answer: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Joel (Jim Carrey) is shy and in a relationship with the free-spirited Clementine (Kate Winslet). They have a fight and Clementine decides enough is enough and hires a firm to wipe out her memories of Joel. When he hears the news, Joel is saddened and decides to undergo the procedure as well. Now THAT is the way to break-up.

Joel (Jim Carrey) is shy, but despite this he strikes up a relationship with the free-spirited Clementine (Kate Winslet) while on a train trip on the Long Island Rail Road. Despite their differences, the pair feel that there is something in the air between them and they connect almost immediately.

A beautifully scripted 2004 film it, deservedly, won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
8. A woman tries to gain custody of her son after leaving him and her husband.

Answer: Kramer vs. Kramer

Joanna (Meryl Streep) walks out on Ted (Dustin Hoffman) and her son Billy (Justin Henry) for fifteen months to "find herself". Ted and Billy endure some rough times early but, eventually, a strong father-son bond develops between the two. Joanna returns and a bitter custody battles ensues.

A monumental film of its time (1979), it was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning for, amongst others, Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman) and Best Supporting Actress (Streep).
9. Going to Hawaii to forget your ex is a great idea until she, and her rock-star boyfriend, end up in the room next door.

Answer: Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) sees his five year relationship with Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) suddenly broken off. Unable to cope, he flies to Hawaii for a holiday where he encounters Rachel (Mila Kunis) and develops feelings for her. Trouble brews when he discovers Sarah is not only on the island as well, but in the hotel room next door with her new boyfriend Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). The brew turns to into a storm as Peter's feeling for Rachel grow and Sarah's relationship with Aldous begins to falter.

Jason Segel not only stars in this 2008 comedy, he was also the scriptwriter.
10. A break-up forces Rob Gordon to look back upon his former relationships.

Answer: High Fidelity

Rob Gordon (John Cusack) feels he's in love with Laura (Iben Hjejle), but Laura has walked out on him. He now starts to wonder where it fell apart and decides to revisit his former loves to uncover where he went wrong with them, in the hope that it will help him to reconcile with Laura.

Cusack's performance, complete with those sad-puppy eyes, is spot on but the show is nearly stolen from him by his record store assistants, Dick and Barry, the "musical moron twins", played by Todd Louiso and the incomparable Jack Black. "High Fidelity" was released in 2000 and was based on a book by Nick Hornby.
