Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Olivia Newton-John plays the female lead in "Xanadu." By what name does her character call herself?

Answer: Kira

Olivia's character introduces herself as Kira. Her 'true' identity is Terpsichore, the muse of dancing.
2. In the beginning of the opening dance number, the sister muses descend from clouds to earth.

Answer: False

The muses "come alive" from a huge billboard located in Venice Beach California. They dance to the Electric Light Orchestra's song "I'm Alive." Of course, at the end of the number, the sister muses ascend into the heavens. Kira descends to begin her earthly 'assignment'.

Interestingly, the billboard never existed as it was depicted in the film. It was 'manufactured' through movie magic!
3. The object of Kira's inspiration is a young artist named Sonny Malone. Sonny is portrayed by actor Michael Beck, who starred in a controversial film in 1979, the year before "Xanadu" was released. Which film?

Answer: The Warriors

Beck starred as Swan in the controversial Walter Hill film, "The Warriors," which was about a New York street gang. Swan was second in command but ended up being the leader after the gang's leader was beaten to death near the beginning of the film.
4. "Xanadu" also featured a legendary dancer in the role of Danny McGuire, a retired, uninspired musician. What is the last name of the actor who played the part?

Answer: Kelly

Legendary dancer Gene Kelly played the role of Danny. Sadly, he passed away on February 2, 1996.
5. Sonny is an artist who specializes in a certain type of graphic artistry. What is it?

Answer: Reproducing album covers

Sonny reproduces album covers which are then hung in record stores to promote artists' albums.
6. Sonny and Kira initially meet in a classic scene - she roller-skates into his life, kisses him, then disappears. Later, at work, she appears on an album that he is given to reproduce. Name the album.

Answer: Nine Sisters

Kira "appears" on the "Nine Sisters" album cover, which is significant for two reasons: 1) She wasn't 'supposed' to be in the shot - she just 'jumped into frame', so the photographer used the print, and 2) She is one of the Nine daughters of Zeus; the beautiful sister muses sent to inspire mortals (according to Greek mythology.)
7. As the lyrics to the song "Xanadu" mention, it is a place. But what type of place is it?

Answer: a nightclub

"Xanadu" is a nightclub - the fulfillment of a dream for Danny McGuire. Danny and Sonny team up as partners to make the dream a reality, with a little help from Kira, of course! Incidentally, the exterior of "Xanadu" was the legendary Pan Pacific Auditorium in Hollywood. Tragically, it was destroyed by two fires.
8. In one scene, as Danny, Sonny and Kira prepare for opening night at "Xanadu," Kira tells Danny he lacks something. What does he lack?

Answer: glitz

Kira tells Danny that he needs glitz, so they rush off to a "franchise glitz dealer." The result is shown during the musical number, "All Over the World", featuring the music of Electric Light Orchestra (one of my favorite songs and scenes.)
9. Speaking of the song, "All Over the World", there is a roll call of cities in the middle of the song. Which of the following cities is NOT mentioned?

Answer: Bangkok

The "roll call" is, "London, Hamburg, Paris, Rome, Rio, Hong Kong, Tokyo, L.A., New York, Amsterdam, Monte Carlo, Shard End, and...."
10. Finally, what studio released "Xanadu?"

Answer: Universal

Universal Pictures released "Xanadu" in August of 1980 in the U.S..
