This is one of my favorite scenes. According to the director's cut of the DVD, this part of the scene where the balloons get stuck in the door was unscripted. Tom Hanks comes back in and says, "Good thing it wasn't the fish." Because no one was expecting that, the reactions of both Kathleen (Meg Ryan) and George (Steve Zahn) were genuine and the director kept it in.

It is during this time that Joe is flirting with Kathleen and she is flirting back, not knowing that he is her competition. Only Joe knows the truth but neither one knows that they are also the other's email pen pal.
