Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wagner: Wotan, The Rhine Maidens

Answer: Das Rheingold

"Das Rheingold" is the first opera in Wagner's "Ring Cycle." It sets the background for the remaining three works in the cycle.
2. Puccini: Cavaradossi, Baron Scarpia

Answer: Tosca

"Tosca" is not only set in Rome, it was first performed in that city in 1900.
3. Verdi: Duke of Mantua, Gilda

Answer: Rigoletto

The title character is the Duke's hunchback jester. The story is based on a play by Victor Hugo. A movie version of the opera featuring Luciano Pavarotti was released in 1987.
4. Leoncavallo: Tonio, Nedda

Answer: I Pagliacci

"Vesti la giubba," one of Pavarotti's best known arias, is a highlight of "I Pagliacci." This work is the only one of Leoncavallo's operas that is still regularly performed.
5. Mozart: Prince Tamino, the Queen of the Night

Answer: The Magic Flute

Less than three months after the production of "The Magic Flute," Mozart died in poverty and was buried in a pauper's grave. In the movie "Amadeus," it is the work that is being performed in the scene in which Mozart faints at the piano and has to be carried from the theater.
6. Meyerbeer: Queen Marguerite, Raoul, Valentina

Answer: Les Huguenots

This rarely performed work is arguably the best of French grand opera. It tells the love story of a French Huguenot young man and a Roman Catholic girl. It concludes with the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572 and the slaughter of thousands of Huguenots.
7. Donizetti: Dr. Dulcamara, Adina, Sergeant Belcore

Answer: Elixir of Love

This comedy is the story of how a quack of a "medicine man" convinces a naïve young man to spend all his money for the potion of the title. In this opera the singers are more important than the orchestra, and each of the main characters is given a beautiful tune to sing.
8. Bizet: Don Jose, Micaela

Answer: Carmen

One of the most recognizable songs in all opera, "The Toreador Song," is a part of "Carmen." Bizet died relatively soon after the opera opened and thus never knew of the acclaim that it would achieve.
9. Mossorgsky: Prince Shuiski, (the false) Dimitri

Answer: Boris Godunov

The real Boris Godunov was the ruler of Russia in the period after the death of Ivan the Terrible. As in most works based on the lives of real people, this opera stretches the truth to make the story more interesting for the audience.
10. Rossini: Count Almaviva, Rosina, Dr. Bartolo

Answer: Barber of Seville

More than one-hundred operas are set in Seville, most notably this one, "Carmen," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "Fidelio."
