Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sarah Brightman came to prominence as a singer and dancer in the 1970s dance troupe "Hot Gossip". What song did she take to number six in the UK Singles Chart in 1978?

Answer: I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper

British choreographer, Arlene Phillips, created the dance troupe "Hot Gossip" who performed regularly on the 1970s television series, "The Kenny Everett Show". The all girl dance troupe were very risqué for that day and age, often performing in skimpy outfits and dancing sexy routines. Sarah Brightman was only 18 years old when she took the lead in singing the 1978 song "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper", dressing herself in a skin tight silver cat suit and wearing heavy makeup favoured by a lot of singers at the time.
2. Although starting her career as a pop singer and dancer, Sarah Brightman soon undertook training in classical music. Which voice type does she have?

Answer: Soprano

Sarah Brightman has undertaken classical training at Trinity Music College in London, as well as Juilliard School in New York. She has studied with voice teacher, David Romano, who has also worked with Josh Groban. Not only has Sarah perfected her classical singing, she can also sing in different languages including French, German, Italian and Mandarin Chinese.
3. Sarah Brightman was famously married to Andrew Lloyd-Webber for six years between 1984 and 1990. Which of his theatrical productions did she perform in first?

Answer: Cats

Sarah starred as Jemima in "Cats" in 1981, little realising that the musical was created by her future husband, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Jemima is a young kitten compared to the other cats and wants to be a glamour puss like Grizabella. Jemima and Grizabella duet together on the stage, singing the famous song "Memory".
4. One of the highlights of Sarah Brightman's career was singing "Amigos Para Siempre" in the closing ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Which famous singer did she duet with?

Answer: José Carreras

José Carreras was a Spanish tenor, famous for being part of "The Three Tenors" alongside Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. "Amigos Para Siempre" (Friends for Life) was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber but only featured as one of the songs sung at the Barcelona Olympics. The most remembered was "Barcelona", sung by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé.
5. Which Sarah Brightman song do these lyrics come from? "When I'm alone I dream of the horizon and words fail me. There is no light in a room where there is no sun and there is no sun if you're not here with me, with me."

Answer: Time to Say Goodbye

"Con te partirò" was an Italian song written by Francesco Sartori and Lucio Quarantotto. It was made famous in 1985 by the blind tenor, Andrea Bocelli, topping the singles charts in France and Belgium. In 1996, Bocelli teamed up with Sarah Brightman to make an English version called "Time to Say Goodbye".

The song became a biggest selling single in many European countries and has sold over 12 million copies across the globe.
6. Many guests appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London to celebrate Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday. Who did Sarah Brightman team up with to sing "The Phantom of the Opera"?

Answer: Antonio Banderas

José Antonio Domínguez Banderas is better known for acting in such films as "The Mask of Zorro" (1998) and "Spy Kids" (2001). He is also a very talented classical singer, playing Che in the 1996 film, "Evita". He reprised his role when he attended Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday celebrations in 1998 by singing "Oh What a Circus".

This was followed soon after by a stunning duet with Sarah Brightman, singing the Lloyd Webber classic, "The Phantom of the Opera".
7. An artist such as Sarah Brightman is a trained classical singer, but has also become a household name singing popular music. Which type of genre is it called where both types of music are used?

Answer: Classical Crossover

Classical Crossover is where an artist sings something that is normally unpopular, for example, opera. The song is crossed over with a more popular and upbeat approach to make it more attractive to the mass market. Many popular arias which have had a Classical Crossover include "Nessun Dorma", "O Sole Mio" and "Nella Fantasia".
8. Is it true that Sarah Brightman has performed at more than one Olympic Games?

Answer: Yes

As well as performing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, the lovely Sarah also performed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. This time her duet was with the Chinese singer Liu Hahn. The duet they performed was "You and Me" which was composed by Cheng Qugang, who is half French. That's not bad at all. Between the three of them, they'd spanned half a globe - very appropriate for the Olympics.

Not only that, Sarah then went on to record and launch the song "Shall Be Done" at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
9. The first solo album by Sarah Brightman was called "The Trees They Grow So High", released in 1988. What type of music did this feature?

Answer: Folk

"The Trees They Grow So High" first appeared in 1792 and tells of a young girl who has to enter an arranged marriage with a boy who is smaller than she is. Sarah Brightman included this song in her compilation of folk songs along with the more popular "Early One Morning". Do you remember these lyrics?

"Early one morning,
Just as the sun was rising,
I heard a young maid sing,
In the valley below.

CHORUS:
Oh, don't deceive me,
Oh, never leave me,
How could you use
A poor maiden so?"
10. On Wednesday 8th February 2012, singer Sarah Brightman was designated as what at a ceremony in Paris?

Answer: UNESCO Artist for Peace

Sarah Brightman has joined other artists, including Celine Dion, by becoming a UNESCO Artist for Peace. UNESCO said her "commitment to humanitarian and charitable causes, her contribution, throughout her artistic career, to the promotion of cultural dialogue and the exchanges among cultures, and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization" made her the ideal candidate.
