Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And you're singing the songs thinking ______"

Answer: This Is the Life

"This Is the Life" was released in 2007 as part of Amy Macdonald's debut studio album of the same name ("This Is the Life"). It was also released as a single later that year and went on to become a hit song during 2008, topping or reaching the top ten in many charts in mainland Europe. With its chart success and its recognizable tune, "This Is the Life" is Macdonald's signature song.

The song itself talks of young people and their night life with their peers, ("And the boys chase the girls with the curls in their hair", "And the songs they get louder, each one better than before"), but not without a sobering dose throughout the lyrics ("And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size", "Where you gonna go, where you gonna sleep tonight?").
2. "Live on and ______ I'm on top of the world"

Answer: Dream On

Completely unrelated to the massive hit of the same name by Aerosmith, Amy Macdonald's "Dream On" is part of her fourth studio album "Under Stars", released in 2017. It was the lead single of the album. As with most of the songs in "Under Stars", "Dream On" was written by Macdonald herself, Ben Parker and James Sims.

"Dream On" starts off with lyrics that describe an independent person ("Never gonna cast my anchor out", "I can't stay here for too long, I got to keep on moving on") throughout the first two verses, only to shift to a more nostalgic mood ("I miss you when I'm gone, I still play the same old songs") coupled with a desire to settle down ("The time is now, I cast my anchor down").
3. "Some kind of ______ with your eyes in a daze"

Answer: Poison Prince

"Poison Prince" was initially available for a limited time online as a single prior to the release of "This Is the Life" in 2007, but was also re-released the following year as a full single, with limited success.

"Poison Prince", despite being a relatively up-tempo song, features melancholic lyrics about a troubled man that have a dark tinge to them ("But what he can't see is that I'm looking through his eyes, so many lies behind his eyes", "Some kind of poison prince with your eyes in a daze", "The way you're acting now, like you left that all behind, you've given up you've given in"). One can't help but wonder whether the "Harry Potter" character Severus Snape - Master of Potions, self-styled 'Half-Blood Prince' and poster boy for unrequited love - would have taken a liking to this song.
4. "I need something more, ______ don't work no more"

Answer: This Pretty Face

"This Pretty Face" is a song from Amy Macdonald's second studio album, "A Curious Thing" (2010). It was the third single to be released from "A Curious Thing", and as usual with Macdonald's songs, it charted mostly in Belgium (number fourteen in Ultratip Flanders and number eighteen in Ultratip Wallonia) and Germany.

While several of Amy Macdonald's songs are about troubled youth or other individuals (e.g. "This Is the Life"), "This Pretty Face" touches on social commentary. The video of the song mirrors its lyrics, and it starts with Macdonald shopping in the same store as a celebrity (the so-called 'pretty face'). Paparazzi appear and pay attention to the celebrity, while Macdonald expresses her indifference ("I don't care who does her hair, or what clothes she wears", "Don't care about hair, don't care about eyes, it's about what's inside"). As the song progresses another celebrity appears and the paparazzi no longer pay any attention to the first one, leading to the realization that fame and looks aren't everything ("It's no good when you finally start to realize, I need something more, this pretty face don't work no more").
5. "So-called ______ is dancing on his own again"

Answer: Mr. Rock & Roll

"Mr. Rock & Roll" is, together with "This Is the Life", Amy Macdonald's most successful song. Released as a single in July 2007 two weeks prior to her debut album, "Mr. Rock & Roll" did not chart as well as "This Is the Life" in mainland Europe, but it was more successful in the UK, reaching the number twelve spot in the UK Singles Chart and topping the Scottish Singles Chart.

"Mr. Rock & Roll" tells the story of two lonely people who find each other. The video of the song switches mostly between clips of Macdonald playing with her band and the lonely man and woman. The lyrics describe the loneliness of both the man and the woman ("So-called Mr. Rock & Roll is dancing on his own again", "Rock chick of the century is acting like she used to be", "It's so rock & roll to be alone"), as well as their feeling of being lost ("He's got nowhere to go, he's on his own again", "But now she's lost her way, and where does she go from here"). The two of them eventually meet, while the lyrics hint toward a happy ending ("And they'll meet one day far away, and say 'I wish I knew you, I wish I knew you before'", "And there's a happy ending, every single day").
6. "Oh ______ you always bring me down"

Answer: Love Love

"Love Love" appears on Amy Macdonald's album "A Curious Thing". Released as a single after "This Pretty Face", "Love Love" went on to become a hit in Europe and performed well in many charts, including the usual suspects Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as Austria, Denmark, Switzerland and others.

"Love Love" is one of Macdonald's more up-tempo songs, with lyrics that deal with heartache ("Oh love love you tear my world apart", "Oh love love you always bring me down", "And at night I wish that you were there"). The video clip however is a rather peculiar one, featuring Macdonald driving a van and coming across several people who seem to be arguing. In the end, Macdonald realises that the back door of the van is open and things have been falling from it. She gets out, only to climb right back in after collecting a small pillow with the word 'love' on it.
7. "But the ______ tells her trouble and strife"

Answer: Footballer's Wife

"Footballer's Wife" is a song from the album "This Is the Life". It was written by Amy Macdonald, as were almost all songs in that album.

The title of the song is a reference to 'WAGs' (Wives and Girlfriends), that is the significant others of famous footballers, who achieve fame themselves, usually through reality tv. In the lyrics, Macdonald compares the titular footballer's wife ("I just don't care in the end who is she to pretend that she's one of them", "She thinks she's some kinda star", "Oh I don't believe in the selling of your glories before you leave this life") to classic Hollywood icons James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, whom she acknowledges as true stars. Ironically enough, Amy Macdonald married Scottish football player Richard Foster in 2018, thereby becoming herself a footballer's wife, if only in the literal sense.
8. "And I'll fly sky high on the ______"

Answer: 4th of July

"4th of July" is the third single from Amy Macdonald's album "Life in a Beautiful Light" (2012). It is an upbeat song written by Macdonald herself, as were all of the songs in "Life in a Beautiful Light".

Although in the lyrics there is no direct mention of the US or Independence Day celebrations, the video features Macdonald and the band she's playing with, mixed with old images and short clips from the US. The lyrics switch between nostalgia ("Well the first day of spring, well it came and gone", "And I dream of the one summer night I spent with you") and a hopeful mood ("And I dream of the day when you'll be mine, and I'll fly sky high on the 4th of July") only to finish with a variation of the chorus ("And I'll fly sky high, happy 4th of July"). And so, despite being Scottish rather than American, Amy Macdonald joins the list of international artists who pay homage to the US Independence Day.
9. "I am a ______, I'm soaring, flying"

Answer: Woman of the World

"Woman of the World" is a song released as a single by Amy Macdonald in 2018, written by Macdonald, Ben Parker and James Sims. It is not part of any of her studio albums, but was rather included as an original song in her "Woman of the World - The Best of 2007-2018" collection.

Released roughly a year after the beginning of the #MeToo movement, "Woman of the World" is a song which starts by describing the need for change ("You had control, but now I'm taking it away", "And nothing feels the same tonight, but something had to change") and goes on to explore the themes of female empowerment and independence ("I'm not just someone else's girl, I am a woman of the world", "I'm soaring, flying, riding high and free", "I'm living life like it was meant to be"). The video clip is a montage of Macdonald and several women of various ages and races, enforcing the song's message of woman power.
10. "'Cause I can't ______, I can't ______ no more"

Answer: Run

"Run" is yet another song released as a single from the album "This Is the Life", written by Amy Macdonald. It was not as successful as some of the other singles of the same album, such as "Mr. Rock & Roll" and "This Is the Life", peaking only at number thirty-six in Germany and at number sixteen in the Scottish Singles Chart.

The lyrics of "Run" switch between verses of giving up ("Will you tell me when the fighting's over, 'cause I can't take, I can't take no more", "She said 'I don't know what you're living for'") and passionate statements ("But I will run until my feet no longer run no more", "And I will love until there's nothing more to live for"). The video clip of the song shows Macdonald walking alone through a forest while she sings, most notably coming across a horse at one point. Thankfully, "Run" showcases Macdonald's powerful voice, making up for the lackluster video.
