Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The recording of "Why Don't We Try a Slow Dance" starts in a style one might expect considering that it's a Barry Manilow record and considering when it was made (late 1970s). But then the style changes, settling down to one more appropriate to the mood of the song with the first line, "Why don't we try a slow dance". In what style does the record begin?

Answer: Disco

The opening bars certainly seem like those of a Disco record (perhaps even Boogie), styles familiar to Barry's fans. But with Barry's entrance with the first line of the song proper, the arrangement transitions to a slow, vaguely '50s feel, appropriate to the subject of the song.
2. Why does the speaker want to "try a slow dance?"

Answer: It's all going by us too fast

Though Barry usually works with lyricists, he wrote both music and words for "Why Don't We Try a Slow Dance" himself.
3. Complete the lyric: "Oh, why don't we try a slow dance And maybe this __________ will last"

Answer: Moment

"Why Don't We Try a Slow Dance" was first released on Barry's 1979 album "One Voice."
4. Complete the lyric: "__________ we've been dancing"

Answer: All night long

In 1998, "One Voice" was reissued on digitally remastered CD as "One Voice (Exp)."
5. How have the speaker and his partner been dancing?

Answer: Too far away

"The Hustle" was a dance fad in the mid 1970s. As far as I know, Barry had nothing to do with it.
6. "All night long I've been waiting for them to play______" What?

Answer: A slow one

Though "The Tennessee Waltz" by Peewee King has been recorded by many artists over the years, perhaps the best loved version is by Patty Page. As far as I know, Barry has not recorded it.
7. Complete the lyric: "Why don't we try a slow dance Before it all comes __________"

Answer: To a close

"It all" refers to the evening of dancing, or maybe to the relationship itself.
8. What does the speaker suggest he and his partner should do?

Answer: See how it feels

Slow dancing was something of a novelty in the Disco era.
9. Complete the lyric: "And see __________"

Answer: Where the feeling goes

In 1979, Barry appeared on "The Tonight Show" starring Johnny Carson, where he sang and had a sit-down with Johnny. He sang "Ships", "Sunday Father", and "When I Wanted You", all from his just released album, "One Voice." He did not perform "Why Don't We Try a Slow Dance."
10. "Oh why don't we try a slow dance and then_______" what?

Answer: Who knows?

In the 2000s, Barry put out a CD series, "The Greatest Songs of..." which includes "The Fifties," "The Sixties," "The Seventies" (which includes acoustic version of a few of his own biggest hits) and "The Eighties." In recent years Barry has also been indulging his lifelong love of Jazz and the Great American Songbook.
