Born Ernest Evans, Chubby Checker formed his first band at the age of 8, and spent many an hour singing on street corners. "The Twist" was originally released as the B side of "Teardrops on Your Letter", and as a result, took a long time to make it to number one. It became the first song to hit the coveted number one spot twice, when it topped the charts for a second time in 1962.
