Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You are my fire, the one desire."

Answer: I Want It That Way

Though "I Want It That Way" only hit number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, it topped the charts in numerous countries, went multi-platinum, and received three Grammy nominations after its release in 1999. The first single from their record-breaking "Millennium" album (their third overall), "I Want It That Way" became a signature boyband track of the era, receiving a colossal amount of radio play.

The music video featured the band arriving at LAX to a mob of adoring fans.
2. "Looking back on things I've done, I was trying to be someone."

Answer: Shape of My Heart

A ballad kicking off the band's fourth studio album release, "Black & Blue", "Shape of My Heart" appeared on radios late during promotion of their preceding album with the aim to keep their singles on the chart. It ended up being quite successful, peaking at number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and having significant international radio play, an important feat considering the rise of several other major boy bands at the time (N*SYNC would break records for their major earlier release "No Strings Attached").

The video ended up becoming one of their longest consistently-aired releases.
3. "You better rock your body now."

Answer: Everybody (Backstreet's Back)

"Backstreet's Back", the band's second album, ended up being a certified smash hit and, while subsequent albums would break its early sales records, it proved the fivesome had staying power on the pop charts. "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" has since become one of their most recognizable tracks, bringing in funk, dance, and pop elements that persist through their most upbeat singles.

The music video, notably, features the group as horror movie monsters in a haunted house. Meant to be a no to "Thriller", the video itself was an award-winner.

The track hit number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
4. "Empty spaces fill me up with holes."

Answer: Incomplete

Following the release of "Black & Blue", the Backstreet Boys receded from the spotlight for two years, taking a hiatus after what was, effectively, seven years of consistent recording and touring at the top of the pop game. What resulted was their fifth album, "Never Gone", which led with the single "Incomplete" at the start of the album.

It was a smart move, allowing the group to take their first number one single in Australia, appearing on five U.S. charts, and being a top year-end track in 2005.
5. "I don't care who you are."

Answer: As Long as You Love Me

A mid-tempo teen pop classic, "As Long as You Love Me" was the second single to come from the boys' "Backstreet's Back" album (following the album's title track). The song was, perhaps, more popular on TV than anywhere else as, while their label never intended for it to be a radio single, its music video paved the way to its overwhelming success.

The video itself featured the band auditioning in front of a panel of women as though for screen tests.
6. "All you people, can't you see, can't you see?"

Answer: Larger Than Life

After the success of their video for "Backstreet's Back", the band ended up pushing the upbeat "Larger Than Life" track from their third album ("Millennium") to feature their highest-concept video to date. Costing millions to make, the video, taking place as a series of vignettes in space, was heavily reliant on computer graphics but kept the Backstreet Boys on video shows on MTV and around the world.

The single itself was a big one internationally, but it only hit number twenty-five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

It was the second single from the album and far from its most popular.
7. "Tell me why I can't be there where you are?"

Answer: Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely

Pushing the group into the new millennium as the single launched on New Years Eve heading into the year 2000, "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" was the third single from the Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" album, and one of its most popular. Topping out at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, this ballad track became a mainstay for the group.

The track also, unlike most of their earlier singles, contained instrumentation normally found in Latin pop music which, at the time, was seeing a surge on the pop charts.
8. "Sometimes I wish I could turn back time."

Answer: Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)

Though the Backstreet Boys had a handful of earlier singles from their self-titled debut album, "Quit Playing Games (with My Heart)" was, decidedly, the one that shot their careers into superstardom, launching them to their first international number ones and peaking at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

A mid-tempo track, it hits the sweet spot that the band manages to strike on some of its poppiest and sentimental radio singles. It hit the radio waves in 1996.
9. "And every time I try to rise above, I'm swept away by love."

Answer: Drowning

Released as a single in 2001, "Drowning" was one of the group's only major hits not to be attributed to a typical album release, instead being made specifically to package with their first greatest hits compilation, "The Hits - Chapter One", which they sent to stores in late 2001.

A ballad typical of the group's top-charting hits, it was a return to form for the Backstreet Boys, allowing them to make steady gains on several charts in the U.S., UK, and beyond.
10. "We're going to a place nearby. Gotta go."

Answer: The Call

Although "The Call" didn't achieve the same success as many of the Backstreet Boys' larger hits, it was still a significant track released at a time, on the band's fourth album, when they sought to maintain their popularity heading into the twenty-first century while also transitioning into a more mature sound and aesthetic.

This said, "The Call", the lyrics of which follow the group as they try to hide their infidelity from the listener via a cell phone call, is quite the silly concept when held up to the lead single from "Black & Blue" ("Shape of My Heart").

It failed to break the top ten in the U.S. charts.
