Born in the nation's capital of Ottawa, Ontario, Paul Anka started writing and singing when only 12 years old. He was actually on the same tour as Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, and was held back from the fateful plane crash by his manager, who was fulfilling a promise to Anka's father to keep an eye out for the young singer.
Also by Anka, "Diana" was #114 on the countdown, "It's Time to Cry" was #489, and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" was #405.

Yes I know, Steppenwolf is not a Canadian group. However, when founding member John Kay (born Joachin Krauledat) first came to North America after escaping from East Germany, he landed in Toronto, Ontario, where he hooked up with the band Sparrow, before travelling south of the border. It's a tenuous claim, but it's enough to qualify Steppenwolf for Canadian content quotas.
Also by Steppenwolf, "Born to Be Wild" was #83 on the countdown. By The Guess Who, "No Time" was #286 on the countdown and "Laughing" was #321.

Answer: American Woman

Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Guess Who started out as Chad Allan and the Expressions in 1962. Burton Cummings joined the group in '65, and they soon changed their name. Although they could arguably be identified as Canada's greatest rock group through the '60s and '70s, "American Woman" was the only song they released that made it to #1 in the States.
Also by the Guess Who, "Clap for the Wolfman" was #74 on the countdown, "Share the Land" was #484, and "Undun" was #347.

The Five Man Electrical Band, from Ottawa, Ontario, started life as The Staccatos. They changed their name in '68. "Signs", which is undeniably their biggest hit ever, was originally released as the B side to the song "Hello Melinda Goodbye". It was re-released after a disc jockey in Los Angeles started giving it air time. It reached #3 in the States, and #4 in Canada.

Randy Bachman achieved considerable success as lead guitarist with the Guess Who. He left the band when his religious beliefs began to conflict with the band's lifestyle. Bachman Turner Overdrive, or BTO, was formed by Randy Bachman and C.F. Turner, and later fleshed out by Bachman's brothers Robbie and Tim.
"You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet", also by BTO, was #198 on the countdown. By the Guess Who, "No Time" was #286 on the countdown and "Laughing" was #321.

Although The Mamas and the Papas were not a Canadian group, Papa Denny Doherty, from Halifax Nova Scotia, was ours!
Founded in the '60s by John Phillips and his then wife Michelle Phillips, the Mamas and Papas showcased the brilliant voice of Cass Elliott, along with their trademark harmonies.
Also by the Mamas and Papas, "Creeque Alley", and "Look Through My Window" were not on the 2004 countdown, however "California Dreamin'" was #46.

The Bells, from Montreal, Quebec, had their biggest hit with this tune, written by Kenny Tobias. It reached #1 in Canada, and #7 in the States. Anne Cliff's very breathy vocals have prompted me to refer to this as 'The Whisper Song'.
"Signs", by Five Man Electrical Band, reached #157 on the countdown, while "It's TIme to Cry" and "Lonely Boy", both by Paul Anka, were numbers 489 and 33 respectively.

From Thunder Bay, Ontario, Bobby Curtola had his first Canadian hit when he was only 16 years old. "Fortune Teller" was his first song to hit it big elsewhere, selling 2.5 million worldwide, and earning him an invitation to go on tour with Dick Clark.
Curtola was hired as one of the earlier spokesmen for Coca Cola, and sang the "Things Go Better with Coke" jingle.
Also by Bobby Curtola, "Three Rows Over" was # 368 on the countdown, "Takin' Care of Business", by Bachman Turner Overdrive, was #272, and "Diana", by Paul Anka, was #114.

Formed in Toronto, Ontario in 1969, Lighthouse was the creative child of musicians Skip Prokop, Ralph Cole and Paul Hoffert. They envisioned a marriage of big band sound and rock and roll, and this 13 piece group was the result.
All by The Guess Who, "Clap for the Wolfman" was #262 on the countdown, "Share the Land" was #484 and "These Eyes" was #138.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Terry Jacks met up with his wife Susan who hailed from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Together they formed the Poppy Family whose biggest hit was "Which Way You Goin' Billy" (#229 on the countdown). After the marriage and the group split up, Jacks had his biggest all time hit with "Seasons in the Sun", a morbid tune that spent 17 weeks on Canadian charts, and 15 weeks on American charts.
"Laughing", by the Guess Who, was #321 on the countdown, and "Three Rows Over", by Bobby Curtola, was #368.
