Canadian Music Festivals Trivia Quiz

Match the Canadian Music Festival to the city it's held in ... oh, that would be way too easy in most cases. How about I name a few music festivals and you match it to the province or territory it's in? Good Luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where could I find the Mariposa Folk Festival? (Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town?)

Answer: Ontario

Orillia, Ontario. Mariposa was conceived in 1961, and has moved to different locations many times in its life. My favorite venue was Toronto Islands, and Molson Park, in Barrie. It is now back home in Orillia, where it began so many years ago. It's a multi day festival, held in early July. "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town", written by Stephen Leacock, was loosely based his experiences in Orillia.
2. Where is the Calgary Folk Music Festival located?

Answer: Alberta

Calgary Alberta. It is a four day event held at the beautiful Prince's Island Park in downtown Calgary surrounded by the Bow River. Rain or shine like most festivals, food on site, and entertainers from Canada and all over the world! Held on the third week of July.
3. Could you tell me where the Miramichi Folksong Festival is?

Answer: New Brunswick

Miramichi, New Brunswick. The Miramichi Folksong Festival is over 50 years old! Multi day venue, with traditional and contemporary music, gospel, and country, dancing, children's events, and great food! (Even a boat ride with live music if you can snag a very fast selling ticket!) Held end of July to first week of August.
4. Where is the Winnipeg Folk Festival held?

Answer: Manitoba

Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is actually just out of town, at Birds Hill Provincial Park. The Festival has been around since the 1970s, growing from a one day event to a four day festival with well over 2,500 Festival volunteers! (if you want to get into a Music Festival free, simply volunteer for a host of jobs, you will probably get fed at most, and get a free T shirt. Be advised, apply early, some have a waiting list of wanna be volunteers!) Almost any type of music you can think of from all parts of the globe can be found here. Great Festival!
5. Where would I go to see the Folk on the Rocks Festival? (Think Great Slave Lake)

Answer: Northwest Territories

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. At Long Lake Park actually, just outside town. Held in July, the Festival grew from a one day event, to a weekend Festival; it features local and international music to suit anyone's taste. If you have never been up north, this would be the perfect excuse to go!
6. Where could I locate the Dawson City Music Festival? (Think Land of the Midnight Sun)

Answer: Yukon

Dawson City, Yukon. The Festival has grown into a well respected and beloved Festival. It is spread out in and around Dawson City from the mainstage at Minto Park to several locations, over the the weekend. From Punk, Rock, to Folk and Native music there is something for everyone. You can even go canoeing! This festival usually sells out early each July!
7. I forgot where the Deep Roots Folk Festival is. Can you help? (Think Bay of Fundy)

Answer: Nova Scotia

Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Deep Roots is held in Wolfville and surrounding venues on the last full weekend in September. Featuring Jazz, Folk, dancing, Maritime Music, and much more, with main stages on the weekend, and other events held in different locations in and around the town. Wolfville is on the shore of the Minas Basin, part of the Bay of Fundy.
8. Where would I go to see the Edmonton Folk Festival?

Answer: Alberta

Edmonton, Alberta. The Edmonton Folk Festival is held on the second week of August in downtown Gallagher Park. It is a four day event, attracting well over 100,000 visitors according to their website. Truly a international Festival with singers and songwriters from all over the world. No onsite camping, but has local hostels and hotels, and fairly close camping (Rainbow Valley is nice).
9. Where could we find the Vancouver Folk Music Festival?

Answer: British Columbia

Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is held at beautiful Jericho Beach Park. Where else can you listen to half a dozen stages on a beach? Over 38 years young, the mid July Festival features "traditional and contemporary folk and roots music" from local and world wide performers. The place does fill up fast so get there early for the best seating spots!
10. Where would we go to see the Northern Lights Festival Boréal? Watch out for the Big Nickel!

Answer: Ontario

Sudbury, Ontario. Northern Lights Festival Boréal is held at Sudbury's Bell Park at Lake Ramsey in early July. It has been around since 1972 and keeps getting better each year. The music is a variety of genres, with something for everyone, kids included.

The food booths and craft displays are amazing. They rebuilt the Amphitheatre, it holds many more people now. (I once, while working security there, would not let the Sudbury Mayor onstage for the opening speech. Well, I did not know he was the Mayor and he did not have a wristband on like he should have! Someone soon came and saved the embarrassing situation).
