Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Black Country Communion was a four man band formed in Los Angeles in 2009. The band was comprised of well established musicians from varying genres of music. Their guitar player has been heralded in the blues community as one of the better musicians in his genre. Who played guitar for the band?

Answer: Joe Bonamassa

Joe Bonamassa started playing guitar at the ripe young age of four years old. He was proficient enough to open up for the legend B.B. King at the age of eight and by the time he was a teenager, he was playing in a band called Bloodline. Bonamassa draws inspiration from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Albert King and it certainly shows in his style of play. For those who have not paid attention to Joe Bonamassa, I highly recommend giving him a listen.
2. Black Country Communion's bass player and chief vocalist is Glenn Hughes. Hughes has had a very successful career playing in several respected bands. Which of these bands has Mr. Hughes never appeared?

Answer: Rainbow

Glenn Hughes was a member of Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976. He played with the funk rock band Trapeze from 1969 to 1973. He also briefly was the front man for Black Sabbath in the mid 1980s. Hughes, a native of the United Kingdom, has a very unique vocal style which seemed to fit quite well with the sound of Black Country Communion.
3. The drummer for Black Country Communion has quite the percussion pedigree. Can you name the band his father quite famously played the drums with?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Jason Bonham is the son of deceased drum legend John Bonham who was the powerful drummer of the rock band Led Zeppelin. Jason has sat in his father's seat as a guest musician in Led Zeppelin, so he's certainly no slouch on the skins. In addition to his work with Black Country Communion, Jason has also kept time for Foreigner, UFO, Steel Dragon and his own self titled band.
4. The keyboard player for Black Country Communion was Derek Sherinian. Derek has played with several established acts and was once the keyboard player for a very popular progressive rock act. Which of these prog rock bands was Derek once a member of?

Answer: Dream Theater

Derek was the keyboard player in Dream Theater from 1994 to 1999. In addition, he has played or recorded with Planet X, Alice Cooper, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss and even Billy Idol. Derek is a California born keyboardist who started playing at the age of five. After being awarded a music scholarship, Derek attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
5. Black Country Communion was together long enough to release three well received albums. The first two were titled "Black Country" and "2". Can you name their third and final album?

Answer: Afterglow

The name Black Country Communion was derived from an area of West Midlands region of England known as the Black Country. Both Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham hail from that area (Hughes was born in Cannock, Staffordshire while Bonham was born in Dudley, Worcestershire).

The band's final release charted at number 48 on the Hot 200 album chart, which was higher than their first two releases. "Black Country" charted as high as 54 while "2" only reached number 71. All three albums produced some good classic sounding rock music and certainly deserves a listen.
6. What was the name of the very first single released by the band Black Country Communion?

Answer: One Last Soul

"One Last Soul" was released as a free download on the band's official website on August 10, 2010. The song "Medusa" was originally recorded by Hughes' prior band Trapeze. The guitar Bonamassa played on "Medusa" was the same guitar played on the original recording of the song.
7. In 2013, Black Country Communion guitar player Joe Bonamassa released an album titled "We Want Groove" with which humorously named band?

Answer: Rock Candy Funk Party

OK, the three incorrect answers are not real bands to my knowledge, but Rock Candy Funk Party is another super group of sorts. In addition to Bonamassa, the band features Tal Bergman of drums, Renato Neto on keyboards, Mike Merritt on bass and Ron Dejesus on second guitar.
8. David Draiman, singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed, has a side project titled Device which was formed in 2012. Their eponymous debut album has a song titled "Through it All" which features one of the members of Black Country Communion. Which member is it?

Answer: Glenn Hughes

The first album by Draiman's band Device has songs featuring some of the biggest names in rock music. Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, Serj Tankian from System of a Down, Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold have all made guest appearances on "Device".
9. Jason Bonham was featured on an American television show titled "Supergroup" in 2006. The premise of the reality show was that a group of successful musicians would come together, form a band, write songs and ultimately perform a concert for a select group of fans. What was the name of the band that was chosen?

Answer: Damnocracy

Damnocracy featured the members Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) on vocals, Jason Bonham on drums, Scott Ian (Anthrax) on guitar, Ted Nugent on guitar and Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard) on bass. The band wrote and performed original songs for the television program, but no songs were ever released on an album.
10. Keyboardist Derek Sherinian was also a member of another super group. This band was a collection of progressive rock icons and they released two albums; "When Pus Comes to Shove" in 1998 and "Ice Cycles" in 2000. Can you name this band?

Answer: Platypus

Platypus featured Ty Tabor (King's X), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs) and John Myung (Dream Theater) in addition to Sherinian. Although they are all mostly known in the progressive rock world, their sound was a little more mainstream, but still had elements of prog rock and jazz-rock fusion as well. Platypus disbanded in 2000, but three-quarters of the band continue on under the name of The Jelly Jam. Derek Sherinian is the odd man out of this band.
