Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. War Pigs
Answer: Paranoid
Black Sabbath's second studio album, released in 1970, "Paranoid" gave them their only UK chart-topper of the 20th century. The title track was a number four UK single and remains arguably their best-known song. "War Pigs" opens the album and was originally called "Walpurgis". This track has been covered on stage by numerous metal acts.
2. Hard Road
Answer: Never Say Die!
The 1978 album "Never Say Die!" was the band's last of the 20th century to feature Ozzy Osbourne on lead vocals. The album made it to number 12 on the UK album chart. "Hard Road" was released as a single and reached number 33 in Britain.
3. Changes
Answer: Vol. 4
Released in 1972, "Vol. 4" was the first Black Sabbath album to be produced by guitarist Tony Iommi. It reached number eight on the UK album chart and number 13 in the USA. "Changes" was a much softer track than the usual Sabbath fare, and was not released as a single. A cover version WAS released as a single by Ozzy Osbourne and his daughter Kelly in 2003, and it topped the UK chart.
4. Zero the Hero
Answer: Born Again
The 1983 album "Born Again" was the band's only one to feature Ian Gillan on lead vocals. It reached number four on the UK album chart, their highest placing for a decade. The album's sleeve picture of a "devil baby" has been generally rated by critics as one of the worst in rock history. "Zero the Hero" is a slow, very heavy number, with a memorable guitar riff by Tony Iommi.
5. N.I.B.
Answer: Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath's eponymous debut album was released in 1970 and reached number eight in the UK and 23 in the USA. The album contains some songs that have gone on to be regarded as Black Sabbath classics, such as the title track, "The Wizard" and "Evil Woman".
The initials of the song "N.I.B." apparently referred to drummer Bill Ward's beard, which looked like a pen nib, although at the time it was rumoured they stood for "Nativity in Black".
6. Turn Up the Night
Answer: Mob Rules
Released in 1981, "Mob Rules" was the second Sabbath album to feature Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals, and the first to feature Vinny Appice on drums. 7. Sweet Leaf
Answer: Master of Reality
The 1971 album "Master of Reality" was Black Sabbath's only top ten album in the USA during the 20th century, reaching number eight, whilst in Britain it made number five. Tracks which have gone down in Sabbath folklore include "Children of the Grave" and "Into the Void". "Sweet Leaf", a long-time live favourite of the band's, has a title that refers to marijuana.
8. Symptom of the Universe
Answer: Sabotage
"Sabotage", released in 1975, was a number seven hit in the UK and reached number 28 in the USA. Better-known tracks on the album include "Hole in the Sky" and "Am I Going Insane (Radio)". 9. Neon Knights
Answer: Heaven and Hell
The 1980 release "Heaven and Hell" was the band's first following the departure of Ozzy Osbourne, with Ronnie James Dio taking over on lead vocals. 10. Spiral Architect
Answer: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Released in 1973, "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" was a number four hit in the UK, whilst reaching number 11 in the USA. The title track is one of the band's most critically respected songs, whilst Rick Wakeman guests on keyboards on the track "Sabbra Cadabra". "Spiral Architect" was the closing track on the album, with an orchestra being employed for the song's finale.
