Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Blackmore's Night was formed in the late 1990s by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and his then girlfriend who sings lead vocals. What is her name?

Answer: Candice Night

Candice is much younger than Ritchie (Ritchie was already with Deep Purple when Candice was born). They dated for several years before getting married in 2008. Ritchie was in his mid 60s when their first child was born.
2. Blackmore's Night has been known to feature a Hurdy Gurdy during their concerts.

Answer: True

The Hurdy Gurdy was a traditional Renaissance instrument that Ritchie Blackmore frequently brings out during live shows. Many of the songs Blackmore's Night plays are modernized versions of songs either from or about the Renaissance.
3. What heavenly body is mentioned in the names of both of Blackmore's Night's first two albums?

Answer: Moon

Their first two albums are "Shadow of the Moon" and "Under a Violet Moon". Both albums also contain a title track as their first song. "Under a Violet Moon" is a particularly lively song with a chorus that starts "Raise your hats and your glasses too."
4. Which Joan Baez song was on the Blackmore's Night album "Ghost of a Rose"?

Answer: Diamonds and Rust

"Diamonds and Rust" is a highlight on "Ghost of a Rose". On "Diamonds and Rust", Candice's voice sounds remarkably similar to Joan Baez's on the original, so much so that when it comes on Pandora, I have to check which artist is singing it.
5. What Blackmore's Night album includes the name of Ritchie Blackmore's daughter who was born a few months before it was released?

Answer: Autumn Sky

"Autumn Sky" is Blackmore's Night's eighth studio release and is dedicated to Ritchie and Candice's first child, Autumn, who was born in 2010. It is one of the few Blackmore's Night albums not to have a title track. In addition to several traditional songs and songs written by Ritchie and Candice, it contains a cover version of the Kinks' "Celluloid Heroes".
6. According to the song "Renaissance Faire", what time does the singer tell her friend was the time she holds dear?

Answer: Back Three Hundred Years

"Renaissance Faire" is on "Shadow of the Moon", Blackmore's Night's first album as well as "Past Times with Good Company", their first live album. Blackmore's Night encourages fans to show up at concerts dressed in Renaissance garb. They offer a discount on merchandise to those fans who are dressed up and reserve some of the front row seats for those who dress up.
7. Blackmore's Night have included many different minstrels on their albums and tours. These minstrels have often taken period related names. Which of the following is a minstrel whose name sounds like a type of tea?

Answer: Earl Grey of Chimay

Earl Grey of Chimay is the bass player for Blackmore's Night. Other colorful names include Bard David of Larchmont, Scarlet Fiddler, and Gypsy Rose. Blackmore's Night usually tour with four or five people in addition to Ritchie and Candice. The instruments include bass, keyboards, drums, and violin.
8. Fill in the missing lyric from the chorus to Blackmore's Night song "Home Again". "Old familiar faces everyone you meet following the ways of the land. __________________ lining every street calling me to come home again."

Answer: Cobblestones and lanterns

"Home Again" is a single off of Blackmore's Night's third album, "Fires at Midnight". It is one of the band's most popular songs (and a personal favorite). At the shows I've been to, it is usually the last song of the main set, just prior to the band leaving and returning for the encore.
9. The Blackmore's Night song "Soldier of Fortune" was originally done by Deep Purple.

Answer: True

"Soldier of Fortune" is one of the few songs Ritchie Blackmore wrote prior to forming Blackmore's Night that the band has played. It was co-written by Deep Purple singer David Coverdale who later went on to fame with Whitesnake.
10. At what unusual type of venue do many of Blackmore's Night's European shows take place?

Answer: Castles

Blackmore's Night's first DVD, "Castles and Dreams", was from a concert in front of a German castle. They have also performed in front of churches. It all fits in with their Renaissance theme.
