Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the record label that was famous for Bubblegum Music?

Answer: Buddah

Buddah was started by Art Kass, an accountant from MGM Records, who joined three friends at Kama Sutra Productions. They were unhappy with their distribution agreement with MGM for Kama Sutra, and contractually required to continue producing acts for Kama Sutra, they decided to form their own label for an outlet for new artists. Buddah was born.
2. Buddah's very first number one hit was by a group that did NOT consider themselves Bubblegum. They wanted to be Psychedelic, but because they were on Buddah they got branded Bubblegum. This song said "Listen while I play, my..."

Answer: green tambourine

Unlike most of Buddah's groups, the Lemon Pipers were a self contained rock band. Most of the others were studio musicians, or mix and match groups made up of the standard Buddah family of musicians.
3. The other 2 hits for "The Lemon Pipers", although neither was higher on the charts than #46, were "Rice is Nice" and "Jam Up (And Jelly Tight)".

Answer: False

Although "Rice is Nice" was the second hit single for The Lemon Pipers, the third and final was called "Jelly Jungle (of Orange Marmalade)".
4. Buddah's first release was "Yes, We Have No Bananas" by The Mulberry Fruit.

Answer: True

It was a studio collaboration, and was done more as a joke than anything. Nobody bought it either, so I guess the joke was on them.
5. One of the early hits that established the Bubblegum sound was a song called "Little Bit Of Soul". Who recorded the hit version of this song?

Answer: The Music Explosion

Actually the song was done for Laurie Records not Buddah, but most people credit it with really making Bubble Gum popular with the younger generation.
6. The first hit for this group was based on a kid's game. It was called "Simon Says". Who did this song?

Answer: 1910 Fruitgum Company

The 1910 Fruitgum Company consisted of Chuck Travis, Mark Gutkowski, Larry Ripley, Rusty Oppenheimer, and Bruce Shay.
7. Like "Simon Says" Buddah released a series of songs that were based on children's games. Which of the following is NOT one of these songs based on games.

Answer: Hide and Seek

1910 Fruitgum Company had hits with "1,2,3, Red Light" and "May I Take a Giant Step (into your heart)" and several other hits like "Indian Giver" and "Goody Goody Gumdrops".
8. Buddah records also released singles by studio musicians with made up names for these bands like "Frosted Flakes", "Salt Water Taffy", and "Cowboys 'n' Indians" with little success.

Answer: True

They kept recycling the same studio guys with different names. Some others were "Chicago Prohibition 1931 and the Carnaby Street Runners", "Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box", and "J.C.W. Ratfinks".
9. When "Quick Joey Small" went over the wall with a ball and chain behind him in the 1968 hit, what did the sheriff have?

Answer: a shotgun and a blackjack

Two of the key players at Buddah, Jeff Katz and Jerry Kasenetz, formed a giant band of 46 members featuring the Ohio Express, 1910 Fruitgum Company , The Music Explosion, St. Louis Invisible Marching Band, The Teri Nelson Group, J.C.W. Ratfinks and more.

They called the band Kasenetez-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus. The lyrics say "Sheriff has a SHOTGUN, he'll fill you full of lead son, he's also got a BLACKJACK, he'll bust your head with one whack. For some reason we listened to this stuff!
10. In 1968, the longest name for a musical group was created for a Buddah record release. The name was "The Rock and Roll Dubble Bubble Trading Card Company of Philadelphia 19141". What was the name of the song?

Answer: Bubble Gum Music

The Zip Code was a nice touch, wasn't it? Hope you enjoyed this little trip back into the world of Bubble Gum Music!
