Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Jesus loves the little __________"

Answer: children

Written by Rev. Clarence Herbert Woolston, this song was inspired by Matthew 19:14, which reads in the NIV, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
2. "______________ was a wee little man"

Answer: Zacchaeus

This song is based upon the story found in Luke 19, where Zacchaeus, who was a shorter individual, climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. Jesus was passing through Jericho, the same city that fell to Joshua centuries earlier.
3. "All things bright and ________"

Answer: beautiful

Written by Cecil Frances Alexander in the 19th Century, this hymn is loosely based on the Apostle's Creed's second line, in which the apostles stated God the Father is the "maker of heaven and earth". Other sources have claimed that Alexander's song was based on other influences. The entire song is seven stanzas.
4. "Joyful, joyful we adore ______"

Answer: thee

Written by Henry van Dyke in 1907 and set to the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. He was a guest preacher in western Massachusetts. His inspiration for the words of the song were the mountains in the area, known as the Berkshires.
5. "Away in a _______, no crib for a bed"

Answer: manger

This Christmas hymn comes from the story of the birth of Jesus, when Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem due to the census. When they reached Bethlehem, the inn in town was full, and the two stayed in a barn, and laid the infant Jesus in a manger.
6. "To God be the ________"

Answer: glory

There are two songs with this title, and the words to each one are different.

One, written by Andrae Crouch, is also entitled "My Tribute", where the other was written by Fanny J. Crosby.

Crouch's song is influenced by the first few verses of John 17, which reads in the NIV, "Glorify Your Son, that Your Son my glorify You. For You granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those You have given him." He wrote the song in about ten minutes after befriending a former prisoner and a few years later, the former prisoner had a dream that the song would be one of Crouch's best known songs.

Crosby's version was written in the 19th Century and was based upon the first chapter of Galatians, verses three through five, where Paul the apostle wrote, per the NIV, "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever."
7. "Seek ye first the __________ of God"

Answer: kingdom

Taken from Matthew 6:33, during Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, this song's tune was written by Karen Lafferty. A second verse is taken from Matthew 7:7, which says to ask for something and it shall be granted.
8. "He's got the _______ in His hands"

Answer: whole world

Known as a spiritual hymn, this song's origins are from 1927. When a singer named Laurie London recorded it in 1957, it started becoming more well-known. Just prior to the beginnings of the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1958, the song reached number one on the list of "most played songs by disc jockeys" for four weeks in April and May 1958.
9. "_______, Jesus, ________"

Answer: Shine

A song written by Graham Kendrick in 1987, he wrote the three stanzas at a different time than the chorus that uses the line here. Kendrick felt the song had merit with just the three stanzas, but later filed it away as he felt it wasn't ready for publication.

It was some time later that he wrote the chorus to the song, after getting asked to submit some new songs to a songbook in his native England. The song is loosely taken from Matthew 8:12, when Jesus said he is the light of the world.
10. "This little _______ of mine"

Answer: light

Another spiritual song, the origins of this song differ. According to Wikipedia, it is mentioned that the song is attributed to Harry Dixon Loes, but the school Loes worked for claims he had nothing to do with the song. The phrase was found in a 1925 poetry book written by a Montana man named Edward Ivins.

In the early part of the Sermon on the Mount, just after Jesus spoke the Beatitudes, Jesus goes on to say to "let your light shine before men" in Matthew 5:16, per the King James Version.
