Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does CMA stand for?

Answer: Country Music Association

The Country Music Association Awards are held each November.

The Academy of Country Music was once called the Country Music Academy, but the name was changed because people mistakenly thought it was a music school.

Thank goodness they changed it! It's confusing enough to have the ACM and the CMA. What if they were both abbreviated CMA?!
2. What famous married couple toured together in 2007 but did not receive any CMA nominations for their joint efforts?

Answer: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

Tim and Faith were on the second leg of their 'Soul 2 Soul II' Tour in 2007, and earned more money than any other country act for the year, yet neither received any CMA nominations, with the exception of Tim's nod for Musical Event of the Year for "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" with Tracy Lawrence and Kenny Chesney.

Garth Brooks is still officially retired and he and Trisha have announced no plans to tour together.

Vince Gill and Amy Grant often do shows together, but they did not do any major shows together in 2007.

Jimi Westbrook and Karen Fairchild are members of the group Little Big Town who married secretly in 2006. Little Big Town did receive 2 CMA nominations in 2007.
3. Which of the following was not an Entertainer of the Year nominee in 2007?

Answer: Brooks & Dunn

Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts were each nominated for Entertainer of the Year in 2007. Brooks & Dunn were last nominated for the award in 2006.
4. Which of the following artists hosted the CMA awards for 13 years in the 1990s and early 2000s?

Answer: Vince Gill

Vince Gill was the long-time host of the CMA Awards. He last hosted the show in 2003. Brooks & Dunn hosted the show from 2004-2006.
5. In what year did Kenny Chesney win his first CMA awards?

Answer: 2004

Kenny Chesney won his very first career CMA awards in 2004. He won Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year for "When The Sun Goes Down".
6. What Aussie country artist won the Horizon Award in 2001?

Answer: Keith Urban

The clue in the question gave this one away! All you had to know was that Keith Urban was the only Aussie on the list, and you had this one!
7. For the first time in the show's history, the 2007 CMA awards did not have one host for the evening. Instead several people hosted segments of the show. Which of the following did not host a segment of the show?

Answer: John Michael Montgomery

After hosting for three straight years, Brooks & Dunn decided not to host the show in 2007. The show, which aired on ABC, was hosted by several country music stars and ABC TV personalities.

Some critics loved the idea, some hated the idea. I personally thought it lacked the comedy of the previous shows.
8. What female artist won the Horizon Award and the Female Vocalist Award in 2006?

Answer: Carrie Underwood

While Sara Evans has won the ACM Female Vocalist award, she has never won the CMA trophy for the same category.
Carrie Underwood won the award in 2006.
Reba McEntire and Martina McBride share the record for most wins of this award with four each (as of 11/6/07).
9. In what year did Montgomery Gentry break the winning streak of Brooks & Dunn in the Vocal Duo of the Year category?

Answer: 2000

Brooks & Dunn have won the Vocal Duo of the Year category every year since 1990, with two exception.

Montgomery Gentry won it 2000.
Sugarland won it in 2007.
10. Which of these is not a real CMA category?

Answer: Top New Male Vocalist

Top New Male Vocalist is an award at the Academy of Country Music (ACM). It is not given every year; some years they award a blanket Top New Artist award. In years with many promising new acts, they award Top New Male Vocalist, Top New Female Vocalist, and Top New Vocal Group/Duo.

The CMA Horizon Award is given to the act who has shown the most growth in his/her career for the first time.

The Single of the Year award is given to the song's artist and producer.

The Song of the Year award is given to the song's writer and publisher.

The same song may or may not win both the Single and Song of the Year awards.
