Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song on the album "Led Zeppelin IV," wasn't released as a single, but it eventually became the most requested-for-radio-play classic rock song of all time. What was it?

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

"Stairway to Heaven" is arguably the most popular rock song of all time. It has been played on radio stations at least three million times. Its sheet music is the highest-selling piece of sheet music in the history of rock music, selling over one million copies. Magazines such as "Classic Rock," "VH1," and "Rolling Stone," have listed it as one of the greatest rock songs of all-time.

Led Zeppelin refused to release "Stairway to Heaven" as a single, despite pressure from Atlantic Records, because they wanted to make people buy the whole album. As a result, the song wasn't an instant hit. Bassist John Paul Jones said in an interview with BBC radio that the first time they played it live, the audience was "Bored to tears." Although the song was released in 1971, music journalist Stephen Davis said that the song didn't become a huge hit until 1973.
2. This song by Pearl Jam was never released as a single, but it became one of the most popular rock songs of the 1990s. What is it?

Answer: Black

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why, why, why can't it be mine?" I believe the song's final comprehensible line sums up what the song is about.

Pearl Jam refused to release the song as a single because Eddie felt the song was too personal and emotional for that. So the song wasn't a hit in 1991, when the album was released. However, the song charted at number three on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Chart and number 20 on the US Modern Rock Chart in 1993. It is one of Pearl Jam's most popular songs. Popular youtube channels WatchMojo and Loudwire ranked "Black" number one on their lists of top ten Pearl Jam songs.
3. Aerosmith's first hit song was originally released in 1972, but it didn't become a major hit all around the United States until 1976. What was it?

Answer: Dream On

"Dream On" was the first single released from Aerosmith's first album. It was a huge hit in Boston, Aerosmith's home city. It was the number one single of the year on WBZ-FM. However, on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, it only charted at number 59. However, the song was re-released as a single in 1976, and then it rose to number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
4. Styx's first hit song, which is on their second album, didn't become a hit until after the band had recorded four albums. What is it?

Answer: Lady

"Lady" is the first song that Dennis DeYoung wrote for his wife, Suzanne Feusi (but not the last). It's on the album "Styx II," which was released in 1973. It wasn't a hit at first, but in 1975 a DJ in Chicago (Styx's hometown) discovered the song and played it on his "Saturday Night" show, which was popular in 38 states. That's when the song charted at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and also charted in South Africa, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
5. This debut single of the Killers was released in 2003, but it didn't become a hit until it was re-released in 2004. What is it?

Answer: Mr. Brightside

"Mr. Brightside" wasn't a hit when it was released in 2003. Then in 2004, the Killers released "Somebody Told Me." That song became a big hit, and it opened the door for the Killers to have more hits. "Mr. Brightside" was re-released as a single in 2004.

Then it became a top ten hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. and it charted in nine other countries, too. This song has spent more weeks on the UK Singles chart than any pother song in history. It also also the most downloaded song on Last.fm. The single has gone double platinum in the United States and five times platinum in the UK.
6. This song by KISS was originally a B-side to a single, but it later became their highest-charting single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. What is it?

Answer: Beth

Originally, the third single from KISS's "Destroyer" album had "Detroit Rock City" as the A-side and "Beth" as the B-side. However, "Detroit Rock City" was unsuccessful as a single outside of Detroit, even though it later became a fan favorite. "Beth" was a B-side because it wasn't a typical KISS song. They had been known for guitar-driven hard rock songs not orchestral ballads. Band leaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley didn't even want it on the album for this reason (they were overruled by manager Bill Aucoin).

Canadian DJ Rosalie Trombley flipped the single over, due to her daughter being a huge fan of "Beth" and demanding her mother to do so. After that, "Beth" became a huge hit. The single was re-released with "Beth" as the A-side and "Detroit Rock City" as the B-side. "Beth" then charted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and won a People's Choice Award.
7. This debut single by Radiohead wasn't a hit when it was released in 1992, but became a hit when it was re-released in 1993. What is it?

Answer: Creep

"Creep" has always been Radiohead's most popular song. It was at one time their most popular song and their least popular song simultaneously. After the release of nine whole albums, it was still Radiohead's most popular song, though certainly no longer their least popular song.

It charted at number seven on the UK Singles Chart, number 34 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and has charted in at least ten different countries. It is very different from the music that Radiohead typically puts out.
8. This song by Whitesnake was originally released in 1982, but didn't become a huge hit until 1987. What was it?

Answer: Here I Go Again

"Here I Go Again" was originally released in 1982. It was a minor hit in some countries, but it didn't become a major hit until it was re-released in 1987 on their big self-titled album. Then, it became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and charted in seven other countries as well. This song helped the album get certified eight times platinum by RIAA.
9. This song by Nickelback was released in 2005, but didn't become a hit until it was re-released in 2007. What is it?

Answer: Rockstar

"Rockstar" is a song on Nickelback's highly successful 2005, album "All The Right Reasons." The album has been certified gold or better in ten different countries, including the United States where it has been certified diamond by RIAA. This was in large part because of singles like "Photograph," "Animals," "Far Away" and "If Everyone Cared." "Rockstar" was an unpopular song at first.

It only went to number 54 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2005 and was panned by popular publications such as Rolling Stone magazine and Buzzfeed.

However, it was re-released in 2007 with a music video that had many rock stars such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top (Who voices some spoken lyrics in the song), Gene Simmons, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, and Ted Nugent, as well as sports stars like Wayne Gretzky and Dale Earnhardt Jr., and many other celebrities.

This helped propel the song to number two on the UK Singles chart, and number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart; it charted in at least ten different countries.

It has since become Nickelback's most popular song.
10. This song by Jim Croce was released in 1972 on an album, but wasn't released as a single and didn't become a hit until 1973. What is it?

Answer: Time in a Bottle

"Time in a Bottle" was released on Jim Croce's debut album, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." It's a love song for his wife that he wrote after she told him she was pregnant. The lyrics are about having a limited amount of time on Earth and wishing to have more time.

It wasn't a single at first, but the lyrics seemed to feel more true to people after Jim Croce died in a plane crash. So, the song got radio play as an album track, and then after popular demand it was released as a single. It went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
