On Aug 29th 1989 "Personal Jesus" was released as a single, charting
at #13 in the U.K. The band initially believed the song would be a
commercial flop. It's actually one of the best songs of their career.
It took 6 months to reach the Top 40 in America, eventually selling
over one million copies and becoming the biggest selling 12" single in
Warner Brothers history.

"Walking In My Shoes" was mixed out of three different versions and
then ditched as the opening single because the band couldn't agree on
which song to use, they eventually settled on "I Feel You".

"Master And Servant" was released on Aug. 20, 1984 as a single with
Daniel Miller (the band's manager) hissing and spitting. The song went
to #6 in Britain and #2 in Germany. Alan Wilder is quoted as saying
that they "spent seven days mixing the track, and then we accidentally
left the snare drum off at the end."
8. "Ice Machine" was the B side to?

"Dreaming Of Me" was selected by the group as their debut single
because they agreed it represented a mid-way point between their

released in April of 1986. It achieved a modest #28 in the U.K. but in
Germany was another Top 10, peaking at #8. According to Alan Wilder,
the song includes 'a castanet sound created by dropping a ping-pong
ball on to the table and a string "twang" that originated from a
traditional Hungarian instrument like a zither (also used on "Master
And Servant" and "People Are People")."
