Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what album did the song "Blowin' in the Wind" first appear?

Answer: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The song was first released in 1963 on "Freewheelin'." Versions also appear on "Greatest Hits" and on two of Dylan's live albums, "At Budokan" and "Before the Flood."
2. "Yes n' how many seas must a ____ dove sail / Before she sleeps in the sand?" What adjective is missing from the blank?

Answer: white

Since the dove is a common symbol of peace, the obvious meaning of this question is: "how long will men continue to war with one another?" But it may also allude to Genesis 8:8: "Also [Noah] sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground: But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot..." The dove cannot sleep in the sand because the consequence of man's sin--the flood--is still upon the earth. Dylan's question, then, may be: "When will man cease to sin so that the consequences of his sin--in this case the brutality of war--will recede?"
3. Who performed a version of "Blowin' in the Wind" at Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert Special?

Answer: Stevie Wonder

The celebration, held in 1993, featured a variety of famous artists performing Bob Dylan's work. The songs were released on CD on August 24, 1993.
4. "How many ears must one man have / before he can hear people ____?" What word is missing from the blank?

Answer: cry

Since Dylan has a habit of alluding to the book of Isaiah, it is conceivable he drew this image from it. Isaiah is commanded to tell the people: "Hear ye indeed, but understand not . . . Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy . . . lest they . . . hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed" (Isaiah 6:9). Isaiah's response is "Lord, how long?" (Isaiah 6:10).
5. What ancient religious text fits a similar pattern to this song, asking: "How many times must two brothers agree not to dispute what is theirs? / How many wars and how many floods must there be with plague and exile in their wake? / Shamash is the one who can say."

Answer: The Epic of Gilgamesh

These lines may be found in Tablet X of the Babylonian epic. Many see in the epic parallels to the story of Noah and the flood in the Bible.
6. What is blowin' in the wind?

Answer: the answer

"The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, / The answer is blowin' in the wind."
7. In a certain book, the answer to life, the universe, and everything turns out to be 42. Scientists then have to come up with the exact question-which some suggest should be, "How many roads must a man walk down?" Who is the author of this book in question?

Answer: Douglas Adams

This little episode, which pays tribute to Dylan's song, comes from Douglas's "Life, the Universe, and Everything," which is part of his "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series.
8. "How many times must a man look up / Before he can see the ___?" What word is missing from the blank?

Answer: sky

Dylan goes on to sing: "Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have / Before he can hear people cry? / Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows / That too many people have died?"
9. Dylan performed a version of "Blowin' in the Wind" on a live concert album with this other group of musicians.

Answer: The Band

This Bob Dylan and The Band album, "Before the Flood," was released in June of 1974.
10. "How many years can a ______ exist / Before it's washed to the sea?" What is missing from the blank?

Answer: mountain

Dylan paints an image of a seemingly immovable object at last being worn down by time. If indifference persists long enough, even the seeming indestructible will be destroyed.
