Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Highway 61" is not the full title of this song. What word is missing from the end of the title?

Answer: Revisited

The song first appeared on the album "Highway 61 Revisited," which was released in 1965. The "Revisited" portion of the title might have been selected because Dylan is, in a sense, "revisiting" Highway 61, which had already been the subject of an older, popular blues song.
2. Highway 61 is a real highway in the United States of America.

Answer: True

It runs across the United States, from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.
3. On which of the following albums has the song "Highway 61" appeared?

Answer: Before the Flood

"Highway 61" never made it onto greatest hits, which does contain other songs from the "Highway 61 Revisited" album: the ever popular "Like a Rolling Stone" (on Volume One) and "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" (on Volume Two). "Highway 61" was, however, included on "Before the Flood" (with The Band) and on "Real Live."
4. The first line of "Highway 61" makes allusion to what book of the Bible?

Answer: Genesis

"Oh God said to Abraham, 'Kill me a son.'" In Genesis, God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. When Abraham shows himself willing, God intercedes to prevent the sacrifice, providing a ram for the slaughter instead. In Dylan's version of the story, however, Abraham disobeys God, saying, "Man, you must be puttin' me on." God warns, "You can do what you want Abe, but / The next time you see me comin' you better run." This alternate rendition is good for a laugh at the start of the song.
5. Who in "Highway 61" had a bloody nose?

Answer: Georgia Sam

"Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose / Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes." Poor Howard is the one who tells Sam where he can go-"that way down on Highway 61."
6. Who had a thousand telephones that would not ring?

Answer: Mack the Finger

"Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King / I got forty red white and blue shoe strings / And a thousand telephones that don't ring." Louie the King advises him that he can rid himself of this junk on Highway 61.
7. What is wrong with the fifth daughter's complexion?

Answer: It's much too white

"Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night / Told the first father that things weren't right / My complexion she said is much too white."
8. Who was so bored he was trying to create the next World War?

Answer: The Rovin' Gambler

"Now the rovin' gambler he was very bored / He was tryin' to create a next world war." Although the rovin gambler did manage to find a promoter for his cause, that promoter was not too stable; he "nearly fell off the floor."
9. What color are the shoestrings mentioned in the song?

Answer: All of These

"I got forty red white and blue shoe strings."
10. What consummate guitarist covered Dylan's "Highway 61" at the 30th Anniversary Concert Special?

Answer: Johnny Winter

Hendrix was a little too dead to put in an appearance, but Clapton covered both "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "My Back Pages." Neil Young performed "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "All Along the Watchtower."
