Stevie Ray Vaughan recorded "Crossfire" on his 1989 "In Step" album, his final LP with Double Trouble. Other cuts from the album included "The House Is Rockin'" and Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby". The following year he released an album with his brother, Jimmie Vaughan, titled "Family Style". "Fire" was a Number Two US hit single by Arthur Brown in 1968 from his album, "Crazy World of Arthur Brown".

In 1975 The Ohio Players took a song called "Fire" to the top of the charts. Three years later The Pointer Sisters had a Number Two hit with a song titled "Fire". Jimi Hendrix was another artist to record a song titled "Fire".

"Play with Fire" was a song composed by the Rolling Stones under their collective name Nanker Phelge. The only two members of the group to perform on the recording were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 1965 the Rolling Stones were recording with Phil Spector at the RCA Studios in Los Angeles when they tracked "Play With Fire". Phil played the bass parts while Jack Nitzsche was on harpsichord.
"Hang Fire" was released by The Rolling Stones in 1982. "Wind's On Fire" was done by Yonder Mountain String Band. "After The Fire" was a Roger Daltrey song.

They released one album together and had a minor hit with "I Feel Good (I Feel Bad)".

In a 2005 NPR interview Taylor related that the line about flying machines was a reference to his experience with a band he was in before he signed with Apple Records called The Flying Machine. "James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine" was a 1971 album released by Euphoria Records.
In 1971 his version of Carol King's, "You've Got a Friend", became his first Number One hit.
