Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sally says I should go to the source for her favourite....but she can't remember the name. What Beatles song starts with the lyrics: "There's nothing you can do that can't be done"?

Answer: All You Need Is Love

One thing I didn't know about 'All You Need Is Love' before Sally told me is that it was a commissioned work. It's been such a familiar piece for ...well...forever, and most people, regardless of age, are able to sing along to it. (As a kid, I used to play the 'mouth trumpet' when that part came on, how embarrassing!). But the work itself was requested by the BBC as the UK's contribution to the first ever live global satellite television hook-up, called 'Our World'.

It is widely respected for its sophisticated, yet seemingly simple musical movements and, of course, for the inclusion of 'La Marseillaise', 'Invention No.8 in F major' (by Bach), and snippets of numerous other well-known works.
2. Pete tells me the love song he uses to sweep girls off their feet has the first line: "Every night I'm lyin' in bed, holdin' you close in my dreams," but he can't remember who sang it - can you help?

Answer: Eagles

Though the Eagles were an American group, 'The Best of My Love' was recorded in London and released by the Eagles on their 'On The Border' album, in 1974. It's one of those songs that's great to sing along to on a long road trip - or am I the only one who does that?

There have been numerous covers of this song, but for me, nothing beats the first version. Obviously works for Pete, too!
3. Cousin Coral tells me she dreams of Michael Bublé magically appearing to serenade her with a song called 'Somethin' Stupid', but she can't remember the first line - can you help, please?

Answer: "I know I stand in line until you think you have the time to spend an evening with me."

'Somethin' Stupid' was recorded first by Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1967, but I know why Cousin Coral loves the Bublé version that he sings with Reese Witherspoon. It's interesting that it's been covered many times by many artists and recorded in Italian, French and Hebrew!
4. 'I Will Always Love You' is the song recommended to me by Katrina, and she knows it starts out "If I should stay, well, I would only be in your way"; but, as Katrina has forgotten, can you remind me which artist made this song her own in the film, 'The Bodyguard'?

Answer: Whitney Houston

Katrina recommended 'I Will Always Love You' to me as she is studying TV and Film at university; she told me that though Whitney Houston recorded it and it was a big hit because of 'The Bodyguard', Dolly Parton was the artist who wrote and first recorded it.

The Houston version was phenomenally successful, being on the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for fourteen weeks, and won Record of the Year in 1994.
5. Kyle seems to have a song at the tip of his tongue. He has the lyrics right: "I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be your fantasy...", but he just can't finish the title. I, however, know that it's Savage Garden's 'Truly, Madly...what?'

Answer: Deeply

I'm glad Kyle reminded me of this song! The Australian version of the song by Savage Garden, released in 1995, is a long-time favourite love song of mine. There was a slightly different version of the song released for US and European markets, and it was used as a recurring theme in the soundtrack of the movie 'Music from Another Room'.
6. "'Listen boy, dum dee dee dum dum dum er, la la la...slip away'" trills Rowena. "You know, that Billy Joel one...er, 'Tell Her About It'!" What are the words of the first line Rowena can't bring to mind?

Answer: "Don't want to see you let a good thing"

Rowena reckons that Billy Joel hit the nail on the head with this 1983 hit song. Though he's been around a long time, it was in the late 1970s and early 80s that he had his heyday. Joel started learning piano at the age of four and in the twilight of this career, has become, as many musicians do, something of a humanitarian, appearing for benefits and fund-raisers, including for victims of Cyclone Sandy.
7. Selina knows the first line is "Maybe I didn't love you quite as often as I could have" but which Texan-born singer of 'Always On My Mind' makes my friend turn to jelly at the knees?

Answer: Willie Nelson

Ah, I bet Selina was one of the four million people who bought this record and made it Nelson's biggest ever hit; it spent 23 weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts! This 1982 song won the Country Music Association's Album of the Year award.
8. Chris reminds me of the first line of the song we used to sing at the top of our lungs when we were teenagers - "Like a foolish dreamer trying to build a highway to the sky" but what was the name of this Keith Green song?

Answer: Your Love Broke Through

Chris and I used to bellow out a lot of songs as we were driving places as older teenagers, and Keith Green was a favourite. He wrote the chorus for this 1976 song and phoned Randy Stonehill to come over and write the verses. The resulting collaboration was a big hit, mostly in Christian circles.

It has been recorded by others as a love song - either way, its words and melody combine to make a great song.
9. Deb loves this song but doesn't know its name - can you help me with the Santana song with the first line: "Where you are that's where I want to be"?

Answer: Love of My Life

Deb has great taste - this Santana collaboration (with Dave Matthews, an alternative rock artist) incorporates a melody from Brahms' 'Symphony No. 3 In F Major'. Though not the most well known of Santana's songs, 'Love of My Life' has evocative words:
"We go dancing in the moonlight
With the starlight in your eyes
We go dancing till the sunrise"

It appears on Santana's 1999's 'Supernatural' album.
10. Bron suggests I listen to a special love song 'When You Look Me In the Eyes' with the first line: "If the heart is always searching, can you ever find a home?" but can't tell me who sings it - can you help?

Answer: Jonas Brothers

Bron always did like boy bands. This particular song was released in 2007 and achieved popularity world wide, especially in Japan and Venezuela where it peaked at number three on their respective pop charts.
