Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which UK city spawned Gerry and the Pacemakers?

Answer: Liverpool

The reference to The Beatles and 'Mersey Beat' might have given this one away if you didn't already know. Like The Beatles, they began in the same clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany.
2. What was Gerry's surname?

Answer: Marsden

Born in 1942 in the Toxteth district of Liverpool, Gerry Marsden founded the group in 1959.
3. With which song did Gerry & the Pacemakers score their first UK number one single in 1963?

Answer: How Do You Do It?

Written by Mitch Murray, both Adam Faith and The Beatles turned down the chance to record "How Do You Do It?". Gerry & the Pacemakers knocked Cliff Richard's "Summer Holiday" out of the top spot in April 1963 to score their first number one hit -- the first chart-topper by a Brian Epstein Liverpool group.

The Beatles' third single, "From Me To You", replaced the Pacemakers at the top of the UK chart after they had spent three weeks at number one.
4. Gerry & the Pacemakers became the first act ever to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with their first three releases. Which Liverpool group was the second to achieve this?

Answer: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Gerry & the Pacemakers topped the UK singles chart with their first three releases -- "How Do You Do It?" in April 1963, "I Like It" in May 1963, and "You'll Never Walk Alone" in October 1963. It would be 20 years before another group managed such an achievement and, appropriately, it was another Liverpool group, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. FGtH topped the UK chart with "Relax" in 1983 and with "Two Tribes" and "The Power of Love" in 1984.
5. Gerry & the Pacemakers scored their third and final UK number one single with a song from which Rogers & Hammerstein musical?

Answer: Carousel

The song is "You'll Never Walk Alone" and originated in the 1945 musical "Carousel". The song has been a number one hit four times, once in the US Billboard R&B chart, for Roy Hamilton in 1954, and three times in the UK. Gerry & the Pacemakers topped the UK singles chart with it in October 1963, The Crowd did so in June 1985, and Robson & Jerome followed in November 1995. Shortly after Gerry & the Pacemakers spent four weeks at number one with the song, it was adopted by Liverpool Football Club as an unofficial anthem.

It is still sung by the mass crowd at Anfield before and during Liverpool home matches, and it is also regularly heard at other soccer grounds around the world.
6. Who managed Gerry & the Pacemakers?

Answer: Brian Epstein

Born Brian Samuel Epstein in Liverpool in 1934, he became famous as the manager of The Beatles. He also managed numerous other Liverpool-based artists including Cilla Black and Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas as well as Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Sir George Martin was the producer for The Beatles, and also for Gerry & the Pacemakers. He produced an amazing 30 UK number one singles, and 23 US chart-toppers.
Malcolm McLaren famously managed the Sex Pistols. Tony Secunda was one of the top music managers of the 1960s and 1970s, managing groups such as The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, The Move, T. Rex, Motörhead and The Pretenders.
7. Gerry & the Pacemakers first performed under what name before being forced to change it because of objections from a chocolate manufacturer?

Answer: Gerry & the Mars Bars

Yes, believe it or not, they really did begin performing in Liverpool and Hamburg as Gerry Marsden & the Mars Bars. You would have thought that the Mars company, which at that time produced chocolate Mars Bars, would appreciate the free advertising, but apparently not!
8. Which Gerry & the Pacemakers hit single was also the title track for a 1965 film starring the band in which Cilla Black, Jimmy Savile and The Fourmost also appeared?

Answer: Ferry Cross the Mersey

The film was "Ferry Cross the Mersey" which was shot in Liverpool with many scenes inside pubs and clubs near Gerry's home. The title song, written by Gerry Marsden, reached number eight in the UK Singles Chart and number six in the US 100 Billboard chart. The song did eventually make it to number one in the UK chart -- it was revived in 1989 as a charity single for the Hillsborough football crowd disaster appeal with Gerry Marsden performing along with other Liverpool icons including Paul McCartney and Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Holly Johnson.
9. Gerry's brother was the drummer for Gerry & the Pacemakers right up until his death at the age of 66. What was his name?

Answer: Freddie

Freddie Marsden was Gerry's older (by 21 months) brother. He was born in Toxteth, Liverpool in November 1940 and was a founder member of the band in 1959 and still played gigs right up until his death in December 2006. The original 1959 line-up was Gerry & Freddie Marsden, Les Chadwick and Arthur McMahon.
10. Find the missing lyrics: "_________ through the wind _________ through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown _________, __________ With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone"

Answer: Walk on

Surely no song has ever been sung so often by so many. It is an anthem for both Liverpool and Glasgow Celtic football teams, but it is also sung regularly by fans of numerous other clubs up and down Britain and throughout the world.
