Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Liquorice/licorice stick

Answer: Clarinet

The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family of instruments and they are, more often than not, black just like my favourite childhood treat. Both are long, thin and tubular. The bass clarinet has a bell shaped addition at the bottom.
2. Ivories

Answer: Piano

White piano keys were originally made of ivory. "Tickling" is an old expression meaning to play an instrument, but to "tickle the ivories" did not come into use until early last century.
3. Pot lid

Answer: Cymbal

The cymbal is usually part of a drum kit and is therefore a percussion instrument. There are several types and sizes of cymbal that come in pairs and also as single items.
4. Squeeze box

Answer: Accordion

To play the instrument, the accordionist has to squeeze the two sides of it in and out to introduce air which lets the sound out. The sound is made by pressing on a set of keys and buttons.
5. Axe

Answer: Electric guitar

Historically, axe was first used in Jazz circles to refer to the saxophone. The term gradually expanded to include the trumpet and then all instruments. In more recent years it is generally used just for electric guitars used in heavy metal.
6. Kick

Answer: Bass drum

Kick is used by sound engineers for the bass drum. It most likely came into use to differentiate between the bass drum and the track marked "bass" for bass guitar in the studios.
7. Spark jiver

Answer: Electric organ

This one is according to the "Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance" by Sandra L. West and Aberjhani. The usage is quite recognizable and the name was used by a Toronto band, Gene Hardy & Sparkjiver.
8. French harp

Answer: Harmonica

Also known as the mouth organ, French harp is an alternate name for the harmonica. The instrument is used in many types of music including jazz, pop, country and rock for example, but not so often in classical music.

Larry Adler (1914 - 2001) was a famous harmonica player and was nominated for an Oscar for playing the theme tune and incidental music for the 1958 film, "Genevieve".
9. Sweet potato

Answer: Ocarina

There are several types of ocarina, but the "transverse" is the one referred to as the "sweet potato". Usually small and rounded so that it is easiest to hold comfortably and to play a simple tune on, even for a beginner. I owned a beautiful deep blue one way back in the early eighties.
10. Fiddle

Answer: Violin

A fiddle is, more often than not, a violin. An exception would be the bull fiddle IE the double bass. The fiddle may be tweaked a little, depending upon the type of music to be played, but it essentially the same instrument.
