Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Purple Rain' (1984)
Answer: Prince
Prince's soundtrack to the film 'Purple Rain' features some of his most popular songs including 'When Doves Cry', 'Let's Go Crazy' and (of course) 'Purple Rain'. The only song on the album with songwriting credits for someone other than Prince is the fourth track 'Computer Blue', which was co-written by Prince, John L. Nelson, Wendy & Lisa and Dr. Fink.
2. 'Into the Wild' (2007)
Answer: Eddie Vedder
Whilst Eddie Vedder, lead singer of the band Pearl Jam, had previously released solo songs, the soundtrack for the 2007 film 'Into the Wild' was his first full solo album. He was specifically asked by writer and director Sean Pean to create the soundtrack after they had collaborated on some earlier films. Vedder wrote the songs after seeing a rough cut of the movie as opposed to composing based on the script alone.
3. 'Magnolia' (1999)
Answer: Aimee Mann
Whilst Aimee Mann is credited for the soundtrack in the film, it does contain songs from other artists such as Supertramp and Gabrielle. Mann is a prolific recording artist - she released her first album as part of the band 'Til Tuesday in 1985, and began a solo career in the 1990s with the album 'Whatever'.
4. 'Harold and Maude' (1971)
Answer: Cat Stevens
Elton John was originally tied to the 1971 Hal Ashby film 'Harold and Maude', but when he dropped out of the project he suggested Cat Stevens as his replacement. The soundtrack consists of two songs that Stevens wrote specifically for the film ('Don't Be Shy' and 'If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out') and new versions of songs that had already been released on several of his earlier albums.
5. 'Flash Gordon' (1980)
Answer: Queen
Despite the soundtrack for 'Flash Gordon' containing no less than 18 different tracks, very few of them feature lyrics, with the best known being the lead song 'Flash's Theme'. Each of the members of the Queen have at least one solo writing credit on the soundtrack, with guitarist Brian May leading the way with five songs.
6. 'Super Fly' (1972)
Answer: Curtis Mayfield
As well as being the soundtrack to the film of the same name, Curtis Mayfield's album 'Super Fly' is also a classic of soul music, with the singles 'Freddie's Dead' and 'Superfly' being particularly successful. The album focusses on the experience of the poor, and has a critical eye on drug abuse, something that is less prevalent in the film itself.
7. 'She's the One' (1996)
Answer: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
'She's the One' is a nineties romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz with a soundtrack almost entirely composed by Tom Petty. What's not to love? The soundtrack album omitted much of the instrumental music that Petty composed for the film in lieu of some songs that do not even appear in the film.
8. 'Ascenseur pour l'échafaud' (1958)
Answer: Miles Davis
In perhaps the most romantic of soundtrack origin stories imaginable, director Louis Malle went to meet Miles Davis at a jazz club in Paris in 1957. After initially suggesting the idea that Davis create the soundtrack, Malle gave Davis a private screening of 'Ascenseur pour l'échafaud' and the legendary trumpeter agreed.
9. 'About a Boy' (2002)
Answer: Badly Drawn Boy
Badly Drawn Boy is actually the British singer-songwriter Damon Gough. Despite working on other material early in his career, Gough released his first studio album as Badly Drawn Boy in 2000, and thus the soundtrack to 'About a Boy' was his second studio album. 'Silent Sigh' and 'Something to Talk About' were both released as singles in the UK.
10. 'Shaft' (1971)
Answer: Isaac Hayes
The story goes that Isaac Hayes composed the soundtrack for 'Shaft' in a campaign to have himself cast it the title role. Despite the fact that Richard Roundtree ended up playing the lead in the film, the soundtrack became immensely successful, with the lead track 'Theme from 'Shaft'' taking home the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
