Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The plot of Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" (The Enchanted Flute) revolves around two couples and a Masonic temple, but which of these four is NOT part of the cast?

Answer: Marina

Tamino's love interest, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, is not named Marina but rather Pamina. In the opera, Sarastro, the leader of a Masonic temple has kidnapped Pamina, but Tamino, rescued from mortal danger by agents of the Queen, believes that Sarastro is the villain and sets out to free Pamina.

In his quest, he is aided by the bird-catcher Papageno whose penchant for talking too much is getting the two of them into trouble way too often.
2. Beethoven's "Fidelio" contains a famous quartet in the opening scenes, but which of the following characters is not only not part of that quartet, but not even found in the opera at all?

Answer: Don Camillo

In "Fidelio", a corrupt prison governor by the name of Don Pizarro has wrongfully imprisoned a certain Florestan. The latter's wife, Leonore, takes the guise of a young man, named "Fidelio", in order to infiltrate the prison and rescue her husband. She plays the role so well that Marzelline actually falls in love with Fidelio, much to Jaquino's chagrin.

In the "Mir ist so wunderbar" quartet, composed in canon form, the four characters (including Fidelio/Leonore, not Don Carlo) each speak their secret feelings to themselves.
3. No opera quiz would be complete without a few works of Wagner, so let's look at his "Der fliegende Holländer" ("The Flying Dutchman"). Who does not appear in this opera?

Answer: Peer

Actually, only four characters in this opera are identified by name - Daland, a sea captain, Senta, his daughter, Erik, a hunter, and Mary, a nurse. The Dutchman himself, doomed to sail the seas as a ghost forever until a woman would be faithful to him unto death, has never been given a name.
4. Staying with Wagner, we'll have a look at his famous "Ring", where quite a few characters have names starting in "Sieg". Which one however does not exist?

Answer: Siegberta

Siegfried is the main hero of this four-opera cycle composed around the old Germanic saga of the Nibelung and the twilight of the gods that would end the current existence of the world. Siegmund and Sieglinde were twin children of the god Wotan, but nonetheless mortals.

The fourth "Sieg" character in the opera is the Valkyrie Siegrune. The word "Sieg" means "victory" in German, but the etymology of the name is not related to it.
5. Carl Maria von Weber's romantic hunter tale "Der Freischütz" also has all its characters only referenced by first name - but which one does not feature in it?

Answer: Friedhelm

The setting of the "Freischütz" (literally translated as "free-shooter") is simple: Max needs to prove his worth as a hunter to be allowed to marry Agathe and become the heir of forester Cuno by showing his marksman skills. However, being quite nervous, he fears missing and this plays right into the machination of Caspar, who, in a pact with Samiel - a devil-like creature - needs to find a soul for his master. Samiel can help them create magic bullets that always hit their target - except for the seventh and last one that will go where Samiel wants it.
6. Another composer without whom any self-respecting opera quiz would be incomplete is Giuseppe Verdi and I have picked the Egyptian setting of "Aida" to represent him. Who is not part of that story?

Answer: Anubis

I certainly hope the presence of an Egyptian god in the list has made this pick an easy one for you - Aida, while involving kings and high priests, does not actually feature any gods but rather a tragic tale of love and loss. The opera is known for some of its grand choruses and marches, but, uncharacteristically for a grand opera of the Romantic period, its ending is rather subdued both in story and music.
7. Gioachino Rossini was another Italian composer very active in the field of opera. One of his greatest successes, however, was first performed in French, namely "Guillaume Tell". Which character would Tell certainly not be able to meet in the story?

Answer: Princess Elisabeth

While the story of "Guillaume Tell" - an adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's play, itself based on a popular Swiss legend - features a princess from the house of Habsburg, her name is Mathilde, not Elisabeth. The overture of the opera ranks among the most often heard classical works of all time, having been used in countless commercials as well as in several movies - not to mention it being the title theme of "The Lone Ranger".
8. Another tragic tale of love - in this case unrequited love - is George Bizet's "Carmen". Set among soldiers and bullfighters, the tale of this gypsy maid does feature all of the following except for whom?

Answer: Pepito

"Carmen" is another opera from which many may know a piece without knowing where it actually is from, namely the "song of the toreador", an aria with choral accompaniment whose melody appears multiple times during the work, being the main theme of the bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen, the titular character, is torn in love between Escamillo and the soldier José.

When she ultimately chooses the former, she pays for it with her life at the hands of a jealous José.
9. Czech composer Bedrich Smetana wrote nine operas, but the one that comes to mind first will almost inevitably be his second one, entitled "The Bartered Bride". For once, love prevails, but who is not part of this triangle?

Answer: Pavel

The premise of "The Bartered Bride" is one of an arranged marriage that goes very much against the wishes of the bride to be. In a twisted tale of layered deceptions, Marenka and Jenik, the man she actually loves, ultimately manage not only to turn their mutual affection into the desired marriage but also make a nice fortune in the process.
10. Although it might also be considered an early musical and is strongly influenced by folk and blues music, "Porgy and Bess" by George Gershwin is universally recognized as a true opera. Who would however not be part of that story?

Answer: Tony

Gershwin's 1935 work was a departure from many standards of classical music, in particular because of its racial themes and the almost exclusively African -American cast and characters (the only white characters in the show are very minor, speaking-only roles without any sung parts).

Its production history, performances and style give the work not only a place as one of the greatest American operas, but also make it one of the first examples of what would become the world-famous Broadway musical theater scene.
