Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'The Man From Laramie' was a 1955 number one hit in the UK for which singer, who went on to become a well known DJ?

Answer: Jimmy Young

Jimmy Young had two number one hits on the UK Singles chart in 1955, the other one being 'Unchained Melody', which has also reached the UK top spot for The Righteous Brothers, Robson and Jerome and Gareth Gates. Terry Wogan reached number 21 in 1978 with 'Floral Dance' and Tony Blackburn had two minor hits in the late 1960s. Ken Bruce recorded a version of 'Donald, Where's Yer Troosers?' for the Children in Need charity, which has not troubled the charts.
2. The football club Manchester United has, somewhat surprisingly, had several UK hits including a number one in 1994 with which song?

Answer: Come On You Reds

All these made the charts, with 'Glory Glory Man. United' making number thirteen in 1983 and 'We All Follow Man. United' reaching number ten in 1985. 'We're Gonna Do It Again' managed number six in 1995. Manchester United is one of the most successful football teams in the UK - if you support Chelsea or Arsenal, please remember correction notes are only to be sent for errors of fact!
3. The Manic Street Preachers originated from which part of the UK?

Answer: Wales

The band formed at school in Blackwood, near Caerphilly, South Wales. The group originally consisted of singer James Dean Bradfield, drummer Sean Moore, bass guitarist Nicky Wire and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards. Edwards disappeared in 1995 and was officially declared dead in 2008.

They have had number one UK hits in 1998 with 'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' and in 2000 with 'The Masses Against the Classes'.
4. Babylon Zoo had a number one UK hit in 1996 with which of these 'man' titles?

Answer: Spaceman

The band was led by Jas Mann, who could have been another question in himself. The song was featured in a television advert for Levi jeans, which helped it considerably in reaching the top of the charts. It was the band's only number one and they had broken up by 2000. 'Soul Man' was a number 24 hit in 1967 for Sam and Dave and 'Rocket Man (I Think it's Going to be a Long Long Time)' reached number two in 1972 for Elton John. Lonnie Donegan took 'My Old Man's a Dustman' to number one in 1960.
5. Manfred Mann was one of the most successful bands of the 1960s and had UK number one hits with three out of these four songs. Which one failed to reach the top spot?

Answer: Come Tomorrow

'Come Tomorrow' reached number four in 1965, with Paul Jones on vocals. He also sang on 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy', a 1964 number one and on 'Pretty Flamingo', which reached the top spot in 1966. He left the band in 1966 and was replaced by Mike D'Abo, who sang on 'Mighty Quinn', which was a hit in 1968. The band still tours with both Paul and Mike as part of the line-up.
6. 'Son of a Preacher Man' was a 1968 UK hit for which singer?

Answer: Dusty Springfield

Dusty reached number nine in the UK with this song, and also had a US hit, where it managed number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. Dusty was born as Mary O'Brien and started her career with her brother as part of the group Springfields. They had some hits, notably with 'Island of Dreams', before Dusty left to establish a successful solo career. She died in 1999 from breast cancer.
7. Barry Manilow had a 1975 hit with 'Mandy'. The song also made the UK charts in 1971 under which title?

Answer: Brandy

Scott English wrote the song and charted with it in the UK at number twelve. The song was re-titled, apparently to avoid confusion with another song called 'Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)' and not, as I have heard, because of the alcohol connection. Manilow reached number eleven with his version, having had his first number one USA hit with it in 1974.
8. Of the options listed, three had UK hits with orchestral works. Which one did not?

Answer: Manhattans

Manhattans had hits with 'Kiss and Say Goodbye' and 'Hurt', with both of them hitting a high of number four in 1976. Henry Mancini had his highest chart position in 1964, reaching number ten in 1964 with 'How Soon' and Mantovani reached number one with his orchestra in 1953 with 'Moulin Rouge'. Manuel (who was not Spanish and was really named Geoff Love) had a number three hit in 1976 with 'Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto'.
9. 'Maneater' was a 2006 number one hit in the UK for which female singer?

Answer: Nelly Furtado

The song was part written by Nelly, with Timbaland, among others, and is acknowledged by them to be influenced by the Hall & Oates song of the same name. The Hall & Oates 'Maneater' was a number six UK hit in 1982, although it is not the same song. The other singers were all enjoying chart success in 2006, although only Beyoncé reached number one that year, with 'Deja Vu'.
10. Manhattan Transfer had a number one hit in the UK in 1977 with which French title?

Answer: Chanson D'Amour

This was by far their biggest hit, with other releases failing to reach the top ten. 'Ca Plane Pour Moi' made number eight in 1978 for Belgian singer Plastic Bertrand and 'Dominique' was another Belgian hit, this time in 1963 for Soeur Sourire (aka The Singing Nun). 'La Derniere Valse' was sung by Mireille Mathieu, who managed number 26 in December 1967, after Engelbert Humperdinck had taken the English version, 'The Last Waltz', to number one in August of the same year.
