From Quiz "Manic Street Preachers: Opening Lines"

Manic Street Preachers Trivia Questions

1. Which Young British Artist created the painting on the album artwork?

From Quiz
'The Holy Bible' by the Manic Street Preachers

Answer: Jenny Saville

The painting is called 'Strategy (South Face/Front Face/North Face)'. Like many of Saville's works, it features a naked female body. Saville also provided the artwork for 'Journal for Plague Lovers', a piece called 'Stare', which was censored by supermarkets, much to the band's disgust.

2. An excerpt from the film adaptation of which novel was sampled at the start of the song 'Faster'?

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible'

Answer: 'Nineteen Eighty Four' by George Orwell

The Manics were inspired by all four of these authors: A quote from Camus - 'The slave begins by demanding justice, and ends by wanting to wear a crown' can be heard at the end of 'The Masses Against The Classes', and Sylvia Plath is referenced in 'Faster' itself ('I am stronger than MENSA, Miller or Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter') - some boast!

3. The Manics are known for their anthemic songs. What anthemic B-Side is this? "Everything can mean whatever, Everything can bring us together."

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers: B-Sides and Rarities

Answer: Everything Will Be

This song was released with 'The Love Of Richard Nixon'. The Manics performed it at Glastonbury in 2003, it was a hit with the crowd. Its repetitive lyrics makes it a fantastic festival song.

4. What song is this from: "Conscience binds you in chains..."?

This was one of the last songs Richey Edwards wrote, before he disappeared in 1995. This song appears on the highly successful 'Everything Must Go'.

8. What position did "Motown Junk" reach in the U.K chart?

From Quiz Manic Mania

Answer: 94

This was a very early single, circa 1992. It is, however, a very good tune and contains some excellent guitar work and full-throated vocals from James Dean Bradfield.

9. Which letter is written backwards in the text on the record sleeve of 'The Holy Bible'?

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible'

Answer: R

The letter 'R' is reversed in the words 'Street' and 'Preachers' on the cover of the album, in the style of the Cyrillic alphabet. This also occurs with the letters on Simple Minds' 'Empires And Dance'; Manics were fans of Simple Minds, back when, as Keith Cameron put it, 'they were more Eno than Reno'. MSP have recently revived this typeface for the sleeves of 'Send Away The Tigers' and 'Journal For Plague Lovers'.

10. What is the name of the lead singer of the 'Manics'?

From Quiz Forever Delayed - All about the manics

13. What was the Manic Street Preachers' first U.K number one?

From Quiz Manic Mania

Answer: "If You Tolerare This Your Children Will Be Next"

"A Design For Life" reached number two. The other two songs listed just about made the top ten. If you are a guitarist, you should try and learn the opening riff of "A Design For Life"; it is not that difficult and sounds great.

14. Which two songs on 'The Holy Bible' were inspired by the Holocaust?

From Quiz 'The Holy Bible' by the Manic Street Preachers

Answer: 'Mausoleum' and 'The Intense Humming of Evil'

Both 'Mausoleum' and 'The Intense Humming of Evil' are about the Holocaust, and were written after the band visited the former concentration camps of Belsen and Dachau. 'The Intense Humming of Evil' features a sample of a report on the Nuremberg trials, in which many Nazis were tried and found guilty, and the second verse begins with 'Arbeit macht frei'. This means 'work makes you free', and is the motto found on top of the gates at Auschwitz and Dachau; a photo of the latter is used in the album's artwork.

15. Whom, according to aggressive single 'Revol', 'married into group sex'?

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible'

20. "I never, ever wanted to be with you"?

From Quiz Manic Street Preacher Lyrics

Answer: "Motown Junk"

21. Who wrote the lyrics to "You Stole The Sun From My Heart"?

From Quiz Manic Mania

Answer: Nicky Wire

Nicky Wire is a lyrical genius. His lyrics, combined with James Dean Bradfield's voice and guitar skills, are what make the Manics so magical.

22. Many of the songs on 'The Holy Bible' feature sampled speech. Who is the woman speaking at the beginning of 'Archives of Pain'?

From Quiz 'The Holy Bible' by the Manic Street Preachers

Answer: The mother of one of Peter Sutcliffe's victims

The sample is as follows: "I wonder who you think you are. You damn well think you're G-d or something? G-d giveth life, G-d taketh it away, not you. I think you are the Devil itself." 'Archives of Pain' is about serial killers, and Peter Sutcliffe, aka the Yorkshire Ripper, is one of the many killers mentioned in the song. Caraline Neville-Lister is the woman speaking at the beginning of '4st 7lb', while the Kidron documentary, 'Hookers, Hustlers, Pimps and their Johns' is sampled at the beginning of 'Yes' (though the person talking is a man).

23. Complete the line from '4st. 7lbs.' - 'Kate and Kristin and Kit-Kat':

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible'

Answer: 'all things I like looking at'

Kate and Kristin were the first names of two of the most famous models at the time, Kate Moss and Kristin McMenamy - presumably role models for the song's anorexic first-person narrator.

24. In 2007 the Manics made a come-back with 'Send Away The Tigers'. What B-side, from this album, are these lyrics from? "Like pretty girls, Oblivion exists."

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers: B-Sides and Rarities

Answer: Boxes and Lists

From Quiz Obscure Questions on the Manics

Answer: 'Jackboot Johnny'

In the very early days James wrote 'Jackboot Johnny' about the rise of neo nazis and his hatred towards them. Just a shame we never got to hear it really!

27. "Hello, its us again"?

From Quiz Manic Street Preacher Lyrics

Answer: "The Masses Against The Classes"

This was not included on an album until it made an appearance on their greatest hits. Many viewed the song as a return to their rocky roots.

28. On what album would you find "Enola Alone"?

From Quiz Manic Mania

Answer: "Everything Must Go"

This album was the first to be released after Richy's disappearance. It contains some of his last lyrics. "Kevin Carter" is particularly brilliant.

29. Complete this line from '4st 7lb': 'I want to walk in the snow...

From Quiz 'The Holy Bible' by the Manic Street Preachers

Answer: ...and not leave a footprint

'4st 7lb' is a very graphic and disturbing description of the horrors of anorexia, from the viewpoint of a teenage girl suffering from it. The sample of a woman saying, "I eat too much to die, and not enough to stay alive. I'm sitting in the middle, waiting" is from a documentary entitled 'Caraline's Story' about an anorexic woman, Caraline Neville-Lister, who later died of the disease. Medically speaking, the title is a reference to the weight which is considered the cut-off point before anorexia becomes inevitably fatal.

30. 'P.C.P.' was released as a double 'A' side single with which other track from 'The Holy Bible'?

From Quiz Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible'

Answer: Faster

The sleeve for the 7" single featured 'Fliegender Tanga' by artist Martin Kippenberger, an image of a young Chinese 'Socialist Youth', who is, ironically, drinking from a can of Coca-Cola, playing on the idea of globalisation, a running theme in many of Manic Street Preachers' works - for instance 'Madonna drinks Coke and so, you can too, tastes real good not like a sweet poison should' ('Slash And Burn', 1992).
