Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Johnny Mathis' first US album?

Answer: Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Music

Only in those 1950s would a record company have come out with such a boring name for an album! But at the age of 19, just breaking into an industry where the record corporations notoriously called all the shots, one doubts that Mathis had much input into the title.
2. In which year was Mathis' first US album released?

Answer: 1956

Mathis had been largely a jazz singer until this time. Although the songs were largely drawn from the popular music side, they were given a jazzy sound on the album.
3. The cover of Johnny Mathis's first US album shows him in front of a curtain - and with something else behind him. What is it?

Answer: cream-coloured circle

Johnny stood, hands outstretched, in front of a cream-coloured circle which presumably was supposed to be the circle formed by the beams of spotlights, but which in fact more closely resembled a big, creamy, cardboard cutout. The curtains were a sort of light muddy brown.
4. Has Mathis' first US album been released in CD format?

Answer: Yes

Yes, it's now out on a CD. The album was released in that format in March 2007 by the label Fresh Sounds Spain.
5. Where and when was Mathis' first US album recorded?

Answer: New York City, 1956

It was recorded in 1956 in New York City. It did not sell very well, but he stayed in the city and worked the club circuit to build a following.
6. Johnny Mathis' second US album was titled "Wonderful Wonderful". How many times did the word "Wonderful" appear on the cover of the US release?

Answer: 8

The word "Wonderful" is repeated, one below another, from right under Johnny's name down to the bottom of the cover. Incidentally, this was Johnny's first gold album.
7. Johnny had five hits in the top 25 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1957. How many of these were on his second album?

Answer: 0

The album started with "Will I Find My Love Today" (Fogarty & Shaw) and ended with "Day In - Day Out" (Bloom & Mercer). None of the songs were a major hit single.
8. The liner notes to "Wonderful Wonderful" were writted by George Avakian. The first person to 'discover' Mathis relently pursued Avakian to get him to hear Johnny sing. Where did this occur?

Answer: San Francisco

Although he was born in Texas, Mathis' family moved to San Francisco early in his life. The person who pursued Avakian was Helen Noga, co-owner of the Black Hawk Club. She had landed a singing gig for Johnny at another club, Ann Dee's 440 Club.
9. Is the song "Wonderful Wonderful" found on the album of the same name?

Answer: No

Johnny's hit song, "Wonderful Wonderful" appeared on his first album - but not on this one. That song was written by Sherman Edwards and Ben Raleigh.
10. Gil Evans was involved in the making of the album "Wonderful Wonderful". In what capacity was he involved?

Answer: arranger

Gil Evans (1912-1988) was a Canadian-born jazz composer, pianist, arranger and bandleader. Some of the musicians with whom he worked were Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Count Basie.
