Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Baby, lock the door and turn the lights down low. . . I can't believe how much it turns me on, just to be. . ."

Answer: Your Man

"Your Man" was co-written by Chris Stapleton, Chris DuBois, and Jace Everett. The song became Josh Turner's first number one song in 2006. It reached number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs.

"Your Man", which is from Turner's album of the same name, won awards for its songwriters. Stapleton and DuBois won the American Soceity of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award (ASCAP), while Everett won the Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) award.

The music video for "Your Man" stars Turner's own wife, Jennifer, in the role of, well, his wife.
2. "He's my Father, He's my friend, the beginning and the end. He rules the world with a staff and rod . . ."

Answer: Me and God

Josh Turner wrote "Me and God", which is from his "Your Man" album.

Turner is a devout Christian and this is just one of many of his songs to feature Christian subjects or themes. "Me and God" is a duet with bluegrass musician, Ralph Stanley, and it also includes background vocals by Marty Roe, Gene Johnson, and Dana Williams, three members of the Christian and country group Diamond Rio.

"Me and God" won Song of the Year at the 2006 Inspirational Country Music Awards. In addition, he won Songwriter of the Year (at the same awards).

Although Turner has some songs that might be considered Southern Gospel, he identifies as a country singer, who also happens to be a born again Christian. In the "White Chair Film: I am Second" interview, he actually said that he felt God called him to be a country singer, not a singer of the "Gospel" or "Christian" genres.
3. "I went to church, sang a lot of hymns. . .I learned to work on my pickup truck. . . Country music on the radio. . ."

Answer: Way Down South

"Way Down South", written by Turner, is from the "Your Man" album.

Some of the lyrics include:

"I grew up workin' on a farm, way down south
I went to school against my will, way down south
I kissed girls, and I shot squirrels out behind my house
I learned a lot about this world, way down south
I went to church, sang a lot of hymns, way down south"

Turner has done some acting; he played the Gospel singer, George Beverly Shea, in the 2008 movie, "The Early Years: Billy". It is about Billy Graham.
4. ". . .I said cling to the Father and His holy name and don't go riding . . ."

Answer: Long Black Train

Turner says that "Long Black Train", which he wrote, is about not giving in to temptation. The long black train is a metaphor for sin and death and the devil is the train's engineer. In the song, Turner urges people to cling to the Father and to not ride on the long black train, even though it might look beautiful on the surface (like the forbidden fruit in Genesis), because it will only lead to destruction.

It's interesting to note that Turner debuted "Long Black Train" in 2001 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. When he was only halfway through the song, the audience gave him a standing ovation. The song was released as a single two years later, in 2003, as the second single from his debut album, also called "Long Black Train".

"Long Black Train" won Song of the Year at the 2004 Inspirational Country Music Awards.

Turner claims that inspiration for this song came from a vision that the Lord Himself gave him. He also took inspiration from Hank Williams' song, "The Devil's Train".
5. "Invincible and strong until you came along and touched me with your gentle hand; When I look into your eyes, there's a force I can't deny . . ."

Answer: Gravity

Turner co-wrote "Gravity" with Mark Narmore. It is yet another song from "Your Man" (the album).

It is a love song about a man who never liked gravity until he met the love of his life.

Turner is apparently 6'1, which the song "Gravity" reflects, when he says, "Grew to be six foot one, depended on no one".
6. "Got a little girl that looks like her mama; she likes it when daddy tucks her in real tight; One night this week we're gonna have a fish fry . . ."

Answer: Everything is Fine

"Everything is Fine", written by Turner, was released in the United States in 2008. It is from the album with the same title. This was his third album, after "Long Black Train" and "Your Man".

I know that FunTrivia doesn't like the word "currently" and stuff that gets outdated--and I'm certainly not going to say that Josh Turner will never have any daughters, because I don't know that! However, I think it is interesting that when this song was released in 2008, Turner didn't have any little girls. He only had sons. While "Everything is Fine" doesn't appear to be autobiographical, Turner still includes aspects of his Christian faith in the song, because it says, "I make it a point to thank the Lord when I got Him on the line".
7. "In this day and time, the right one is hard to find; girl, that's why I'm holding on to you . . ."

Answer: Soulmate

Turner co-wrote "Soulmate" with John David Anderson. He dedicated it to his wife. It is from the album, "Everything is Fine".

Turner married Jennifer Ford in 2003. They met in the 1990's when they were both students at Belmont University in Nashville.

Jennifer starred in the music videos for "Your Man" and "I Wouldn't be a Man", the latter being a remake of a Don Williams song.
8. "When the good Lord made that little looker, He must of used a whole lot of sugar; Maybe that's the reason that I crave her . . ."

Answer: Eye Candy

Turner co-wrote "Eye Candy" with Pat McLaughlin and Shawn Camp. It is from the album "Haywire", released in the United States in 2010.

In an interview with Country Music Television (CMT), he said:

"I had come up with this title, 'Eye Candy,' and I'd never really heard a song called 'Eye Candy.' I got to thinking about what a great job we did on 'Firecracker,' and I was thinking, 'I've gotta write 'Eye Candy' with these two guys.' They came in, and we had a ball writing that song. The hardest part was keeping it clean, but it was a fun day, needless to say."

9. "She's got an old soul, she's the salt of the earth; When she gives her love, she knows what it's worth . . ."

Answer: Hometown Girl

"Hometown Girl" was co-written by Marc Beeson and Daniel Tashian. It is from Turner's 2017 album, "Deep South".

While Turner didn't write "Hometown Girl", he knew he wanted to sing it from the first time he heard it.

"The first time I heard 'Hometown Girl,' I was kind of excited, because, first of all, it sounded like a hit to me," said Turner. "It just had that hit chorus and it just had that vibe that didn't really lose you. It held your attention. But honestly, it was different for me, and that's kind of what I was looking for. I was looking for those songs that I felt like that would be different for me that or things that I hadn't done really yet, but still had those Josh Turner ingredients, which is basically a lyric that tells a story that has a good message and just has a melody that caters to my voice. It had all that, and so it was just kind of a no-brainer." (Source: Songfacts.com, in the article about "Hometown Girl").

This song was evidently inspired by an old crush of Marc Beeson.
10. "I grew up in. . . singing all them bluegrass and country songs. I'd sing from Hannah down to Charlestowne. . ."

Answer: South Carolina Low Country

"South Carolina Low Country", written by Turner, is from "Everything is Fine".

Josh Turner was born November 20, 1977, in Hannah, South Carolina. After high school, he moved to Nashville.

Personally, I always found it ironic how Scotty McCreery, who performed Turner's "Your Man" for his audition for Season 10 of "American Idol", comes from North Carolina and Turner comes from South Carolina. After his performance, McCreery had sometimes been compared to his role model (Turner), in regards to voice and faith.
