Kishore Kumar was born on 4th August 1929 in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, India to Kunjalal Ganguly and Gouri Devi. Kishore's elder brother was known in the Hindi film industry as Ashok Kumar and was a well-established star. Abhas Ganguly took the name of Kishore Kumar.

He got his first break from music director Khemchand Prakash in 1948 in the movie 'Ziddi'. Apart from his singing career, he also acted in movies and made his debut as a hero in the movie 'Andolan' in 1951. In later years, he was known as a comic hero and acted in hit movies like 'Asha', 'Chalti Ka Naam Ghadi' and 'Half Ticket'.

S D Burman was the composer who recognized Kishore's talents and gave him a number of singing opportunities. In the 1950s Dev Anand was the reigning superstar of Bolllywood and Dev worked with S D Burman, who in turn gave many songs to Kishore. "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke" is a song from the 1957 film 'Hum Naujawan'.

In 1958, Kishore Kumar along with his illustrious brothers Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar produced and starred in an all-time legendary movie 'Chalti Ka Naam Gadi'. Madhubala starred in the movie as heroine. The movie had music by S D Burman and had hit songs like "Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhagi Se" and "Paanch Rupaiya Baara Anna".

In 1960 Kishore married Madhubala despite knowing that she was seriously ill. Madhubala died in 1969. Kishore had four wives. He was first married to Ruma Devi, after which he married Madhubala.

After Madhubala's death, he married actress Yogeeta Bali. His fourth wife was Leena Chandravarkar whom he married in 1980.

The song 'Neele Neele Ambar Par' is a popular Kishore Kumar song from the movie 'Kalakar'. This song as well as the soulful "Mera Jeevan Kora Kagaz" was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. The song "Dil Kya Kare" from the film 'Julie' had music by Rajesh Roshan.

Kishore Kumar sung a number of hit songs for music composer Bappi Lahiri. These include the highly popular "Chalte Chalte Mere Ye Geet Yaad Rakhna" ('Chalte Chalte'), "Pag Ghungroo" ('Namak Halal'), "Albela Mausam" ('Tohfa'). All the songs from the movie 'Sharabi' were hits and the song "Manzilein Apni Jaga" won him a Filmfare award in 1985.
Kishore Kumar recorded his last song "Guru O Guru" on 12th October 1985 with Asha Bhosle for the movie 'Waqt Ki Awaz', the music was by Bappi Lahiri. On the next day, 13th October 1985, Kishore Kumar died in Mumbai of a massive heart attack, he was 58.
