A Night on the Tiles with Kenickie Quiz

No, I'm not talking about the character from 'Grease'! I'm talking about the three-woman, one-man quartet from Sunderland who released two albums in the '90s. Before she was a DJ, Lauren Laverne was their singer.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two members of Kenickie are related?

Answer: Lauren Laverne and Johnny X

Singer/guitarist Lauren Laverne and drummer Johnny X are siblings; their real names are Lauren and Pete Gofton. Johnny X is the older of the two. All the band decided to adopt stage names based on cities; Marie du Santiago's real name is Anne Marie and Emmy-Kate Montrose's real name is Emma Jackson (and her dad's name is Michael!) Lauren met Marie in primary school and Emmy-Kate in high school. Kenickie were formed while the girls were at Sixth Form college.
2. What is the name of Kenickie's first EP, released on indie label Slampt?

Answer: Catsuit City

'Catsuit City' is very hard to track down, as Kenickie bought up the rights to prevent it being reissued. Lauren Laverne drew the cover art, which features the band as humanoid cats. It was released in 1995. As for the other choices, 'Skillex' was the band's second EP, 'Killing Fantasy' was a B-side from 'In Your Car' and 'Kamikaze Annelids' was a B-side from 'Millionaire Sweeper'.
3. Which controversial musician described Kenickie as 'a big bunch of sex' after meeting them in New York?

Answer: Courtney Love

Courtney Love's full quote was: "They're a big bunch of sex, that band Kenickie. They're a big, raw-boned bunch of [censored] sex - all three of them and the boy. I hope they get good. I hope we're a good example to them, I hope this record's huge and then the big labels will start sniffing around and then those big [censored] raw-boned sexy Newcastle (sic) girls will be huge and have Number Ones and there will be an Amazon planet the way I want it." She got one thing wrong - Kenickie are from Sunderland, NOT Newcastle! (The accent is similar and both cities are in the north-east of England, so they're easily confused.) Alan McGee, the head of Creation Records, was also a fan and tried to sign them, but Kenickie turned them down as the girls were sitting their A-Levels at the time.
4. What instrument does Emmy-Kate Montrose play on 'At the Club' besides bass?

Answer: Trumpet

Emmy-Kate plays the trumpet on 'In Your Car' and 'Punka' amongst other songs. Kenickie are a band of multi-instrumentalists; all four members play keyboard instruments, and Lauren also plays the cello on 'Acetone'. Marie and Emmy-Kate also play Indian bells.
5. On which of these singles from 'At the Club' does Marie du Santiago sing lead vocals?

Answer: Nightlife

All the other songs were sung by Lauren Laverne. Marie also sings on 'Spies', 'Acetone' and 'Classy', and shares the vocals with Lauren on 'Come Out 2nite'.
6. How many singles were released from Kenickie's second album, 'Get In'?

Answer: 2

'Get In' was the 1998 follow-up to 'At the Club', and while it received decent reviews from the weekly papers, it sold relatively poorly. The two singles released from the album were 'I Would Fix You' and 'Stay in the Sun', both of which had Lauren Laverne on lead vocals. The album was re-released in 2012 with additional bonus tracks.
7. Which Eurovision Song Contest winner did Kenickie cover on the 1998 Eurovision tribute album, 'Songs for Eurotrash'?

Answer: 'Save Your Kisses for Me' by Brotherhood of Man

'Save Your Kisses for Me' was the winning song for the Eurovision Song Contest of 1976, and was performed by British band Brotherhood of Man. 'A Song for Eurotrash' was a tribute album of Eurovision winners covered by various '80s and '90s bands, named after the 'Eurotrash' special episode of the same name. 'Eurotrash' was a kitsch late-night magazine show on Channel 4 presented by Antoine de Caunes and designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, featuring bizarre people and topics from all over the world, with a focus of Europe.

As for the other answers, 'Waterloo', the 1974 winner, was covered by Bananarama; 'Ding A Dong', the 1975 winner, was covered by Edwyn Collins; and 'Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son', the 1965 winner, was covered by Dubstar and Sacha Distel.

Other musicians featured included Sinead O'Connor, the Pogues' Shane McGowan and Scottish band Annie Christian.
8. How did Kenickie announce their split?

Answer: Onstage in London

During a gig at London Astoria in October 1998, only two months after 'Get In' was released, Lauren announced at the end, "We were Kenickie, a bunch of [censored]s." She later blamed the band's split on 'music industry scumbags'. The band were effectively split in half; Emmy-Kate and Marie formed a new band, Rosita, with Kenickie's touring keyboardist Dot Allan, while Lauren and Johnny X - who had switched from drums to guitar - formed a band called Chris.

The split was thought to be acrimonious, though Marie later denied it and said that the members 'never properly fell out'. Lauren has since said that they wanted to split up while it was still fun and didn't want to end up doing 'a third album that no-one cared about'.
9. After Kenickie, Lauren guested on a dance track called 'Don't Falter'. Which British electro group were behind this?

Answer: Mint Royale

Mint Royale were a producer duo consisting of Neil Claxton and Chris Baker, who left the band in 2004. They had previously made waves in the UK singles charts with their remix of Terrorvision's 'Tequila', which reached Number Two. 'Don't Falter' featured Lauren on lead vocals and reached Number 15 in the charts.

After Kenickie split, Lauren also released an EP, 'Take These Flowers Away', and was working on a solo album, which was shelved due to her label, Deceptive, dissolving in 2001.
10. Which radio station did Lauren Laverne join in 2002?

Answer: XFM London

Although Lauren Laverne has presented on 6 Music, XFM - now Radio X - was where she started out as a radio presenter. She has also presented 'Woman's Hour' and 'Desert Island Discs' on Radio 4. As for the other members, Marie worked on the Executive of Sunderland Students' Union and sang with the Cornshed Sisters, a folk band; Emmy-Kate completed a Sociology PhD and subsequently became a Sociology lecturer at Goldsmiths University; and Johnny X continued making music under the name of J Xaverre.
