Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We know that the 'Fellowship theme' is played throughout the 'Fellowship of the Ring'. After the full form of the 'Fellowship theme' has been played throughout the movie a few times, it diminishes to a short, unfinished, 'Fellowship theme' after some point. Why is this so?

Answer: Gandalf has died and the Fellowship is not whole

The playing of the 'Fellowship theme' stops after Gandalf's fall in the 'Fellowship of the Ring'. The last complete 'Fellowhip theme' we hear is when the Fellowship is running down the halls of Moria, orcs chasing after them. We hear the broken 'Fellowship theme' (only the notes 'E, D, D, E') after Gandalf dies when the rest of the Fellowship sails down the river Anduin when they leave Lothlorien.
2. Which theme music is most commonly and clearly in a 5/4 meter?

Answer: 'Isengard theme'

The 5/4 meter was put into the 'Isengard theme' so it would have an unresolved feeling. The 5/4 meter also supposedly represents war and machinery. The 5/4 is also in Gustav Holst's 'Mars, the Bringer of War'.
The 'Hobbiton theme' is in a light 4/4 meter. Gollum has two themes: stinker (when Gollum creeps up on Frodo and Sam in 'The Two Towers'), and slinker (when Gollum is in the Forbidden Pool and Frodo asks him to come with him). Both are in a slow 4/4 meter. The 'Shelob theme' (in the whole part of 'Shelob's Lair') switches from 3/4 to 2/4 to 3/4 to 2/4 to 3/4 to 2/4.
3. What instrument is used to provide the beat in the 'Isengard theme' that evokes an evil sense of what Saruman is doing?

Answer: Brake drum

The brake drum, taken from the wheel of a car, has a very metallic banging sound.
Metal bowls are usually rubbed around the rim to create a ringing sound.
Gongs are usually meant to be played once to let it ring, not in continuous beats.
Trash can lids will produce, of course, a metallic sound, but it might sound too much like trash can lids...
4. In the scenes in 'The Return of the King' when the beacons are lit on the Gondorian mountains, we hear a modified 'Minas Tirith theme': the original 'Minas Tirith theme' played by trumpets and a high-pitch tune with 16th notes that imitates flame movement. What instruments play this firey tune?

Answer: Violins

Yes, violins play it (one of my favorite tunes in 'The Return of the King'). If woodwinds were to play 16th notes at the actual 'Minas Tirith theme' speed, they would tire out after the first 2 bars (tell me if I'm wrong). Xylophones would just sound very unsuitable to the royal Gondorian environment.
5. There are two very similar themes played almost exactly the same way near the end (it's like an ending theme) in both the 'Fellowship of the Ring' and the 'Two Towers'. It starts off with a long held 'D' note played by the violins while the cellos and horns modify the harmony. It is in a Major key. What are the scenes from both the 'Fellowship of the Ring' and the 'Two Towers' that play this theme?

Answer: Frodo looking at the river Anduin and pushing off on his boat; Frodo and Sam in Osgiliath

After the theme is played in the 'Fellowship of the Ring', the cellos and the horns gang up and go against the violins to do a sort of duet, when Sam wades across the Anduin towards Frodo's boat and almost drowns.
After the theme is played in the 'Two Towers', it turns into a melodious tune (definitely one of my favorites) when Sam gives his speech and says 'There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for'.
6. The 'Anduril theme' is associated with scenes about the sword of Elendil and the future king. Which of these scenes in the 'Return of the King', however, does the 'Anduril theme' not play in?

Answer: The scene when Aragorn shows Sauron himself and Anduril in the Palantir

The 'Anduril theme', one of my favorites (gosh I have so many), is clearly played in the scenes with the reforging of Anduril and when Elrond shows Aragorn the reforged Anduril (a modified 'Rivendell theme' is also played in these scenes). The 'Anduril theme' is played by strings in the 'White Tree' scene and is played by a nice solo horn in the other two scenes.
7. Of the two Gollum/Smeagol themes, which theme ('stinker' or 'slinker') describes a sad theme, or Smeagol feeling sorry for himself?

Answer: Slinker

This 'Slinker theme' is played when Gollum has hold of a fish in the Forbidden Pool and Frodo asks Gollum to come with him. It is also played in Moria in the 'Fellowship of the Ring'. The 'Stinker theme' is a mysterious, haunting theme. It symbolizes Gollum's evil intent to try to get the ring back.

It plays when Gollum climbs down a rock in Emyn Muil (vertically, upside-down) and is about to pounce on Frodo and Sam.
8. At some points in the movies, the action music is going on with a lot of noise. Then all of a sudden, the whole world seems to stop and the music sinks down to some sad tune, as if evil has taken over. Which of these scenes is not one of the instances?

Answer: The Mordor army being unleashed in Minas Morgul

The Minas Morgul music (a 'Mordor theme') is evil, but it is noisy all the way through. However, in the other instances, we go from a terrific, terrible struggle between good and evil. We ask: who is going to win? Then, the answer is revealed: all hope is lost...
9. What is the famous evil chant in Adunaic, the ancient speech of Men that we hear in some parts of the 'Fellowship of the Ring'?

Answer: The Revolution of the Ringwraiths

This chant is sung when Ringwraiths appear on the road, on Weathertop, in Bree, and when Frodo rides Asfaloth with Arwen to Rivendell while Ringwraiths chase after them.
Here are the lyrics:
"Nebabitham Maganane
Netabdam daurad
Nepam ned abarat-aglar
ido Nidir nenakham
Bari 'n Katharad"

In English, it means:

"We deny our maker.
We cling to the darkness.
We grasp for ourselves power and glory.
Now we come, the Nine,
Lords of Eternal Life."

Adunaic, also called Numenorean, was the ancient speech of Men, used about the time when they were born into Middle-earth after the Elves. They were trying to make their own language. They had dealings with Dark-elves and Dwarves and they kind of based their language on their languages. I'm not sure why it is used with the speech of the Ringwraiths, since it is not the Black Speech. I think it is because three of the Ringwraiths were Numenoreans. 'Adunaic' literally means 'West language'.

If you think about it, you can eliminate answers. The Moria chants are probrably Dwarvish (and they are) since Moria is a Dwarven city. The Uruk-hai chants are bred for evil purposes by Saruman. They are a cross-breed of gobilns and orcs. The Uruk-hai speak the Black Speech (and the Common Speech sometimes) that all orcs speak. Since the Ringwraiths are Men seduced by Sauron, they will probrably speak Adunaic.

Merry and Pippin beer songs: LOL!
10. Which music in the 'Return of the King' has a very unusual tune with ugly, dissonance sounds?

Answer: 'Shelob's Lair'

Peter Jackson wanted to 'Shelob's Lair' to be 'a film in the film' which meant that Shelob's tunnel had to be a different world altogether from the rest of Middle-earth. I think it's the most unusual piece of music in the whole film.
I hope you enjoyed my quiz!
