Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We walk around this town like we own the streets, and we stay awake through summer like we own the heat, singing everybody wake up". What song is this anthem of teenage boredom?

Answer: "Soco Amaretto Lime" by Brand New

A "soco amaretto lime" is actually a mixed drink - Southern Comfort and Amaretto, with a lime to garnish! An interesting title for a song about partying and wandering the streets drinking.
2. "Wearing your black eye like a badge of honor, soaking in sympathy from friends who never loved you nearly half as much as me". What song is this?

Answer: "There No 'I' in Team" by Taking Back Sunday

In the CDs liner notes, the next line read "but irony is for suckers", although you can't hear this being sung.
3. "The greatest tragedy is not your death, but a life without reason, that your life had no purpose". What song does this oh-so-true line come from?

Answer: "Never Take Friendship Personal" by Anberlin

This is the title track to Anberlin's second full-length album. Their first was called "Blueprints for the Black Market".
4. "I know times are getting hard, but just believe me girl someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar, we'll have it good". What song about long-distance relationships does this come from?

Answer: "Hey There Delilah" by The Plain White Ts

This is such a cute song! The Plain White Ts are signed to a small indie rock label, Fearless Records - which gives me opening for a shameless plug for my friends in the Fully Down, who were signed to Fearless in 2005 and released their debut CD!
5. "As we round the corner to your house you turned to me and said 'I'll be going through withdrawl of you for this one night we have spent'". What love song contains this line?

Answer: "Tiger Lily" by Matchbook Romance

This band from Poughkeepsie, NY really got its start on the Internet - when they first formed back in '97, the first things they did were to create a web page and put some tunes on mp3.com. They were discovered by Epitaph records, when an executive was browsing around the 'Net, looking for new acts. Who's laughing now, internet file-sharing laws?
6. "There is no need to test my heart with useless space. These roads go on forever. There'll always be a place for you in my heart". In which song does this line appear?

Answer: "Living in Your Letters" by Dashboard Confessional

Dashboard Confessional is another band that has a lot of songs about long distance relationships. And of course by 'band' I mean, artist - Chris Carrabba is really the only member, but occasionally records full-band tracks with his back-up musicians.
7. "Life is but a dream for the dead, I won't go down by myself, but I'll go down with my friends". What oddly titled song does this come from?

Answer: "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison" by My Chemical Romance

Having recently seen MCR in concert, I can accurately tell you they put on a really good show, with high energy. Gerard Way, the lead singer, wears a bulletproof vest and is now officially the love of my life.
8. "I'm better off without you. Do you regret so, your loneliness?" What breakup song does this come from?

Answer: "I Want to Hear You Sad" by The Early November

The Early November are a still relatively unknown band from NJ. They belong to indie label Drive Thru Records, the same label who bring you the band Halifax - who have toured with the Fully Down (end of free publicity, I swear!)
9. "I'm confused... all I can do is quietly grin and resent you". Which of my favourite songs contains this line?

Answer: "Losing You" by The New Amsterdams

A friend of mine likes to call The New Amsterdams "Dashboard Confessional, Jr.". It's essentially one guy writing and recording these teary emo songs, and he's signed to Vagrant records to boot.
10. "You should've heard me sobbing as I drove home that night. Got into bed and stayed there, for days I just laid there having been permanently changed". What song is this from?

Answer: "Pretty Pathetic" by The Ataris

This song was originally recorded by The Smoking Popes... but I, for one, definitely prefer the Ataris version. It is a nice piano song, which you don't really hear that often in the emo rock world.
11. "I'd like to fall asleep to the beat of you breathing in a room near a truckstop on a highway somewhere". What song is this in?

Answer: "My Favourite Chords" by The Weakerthans

Lead singer/guitarist of the band, John Sampson was previously in the band Propaghandi - and to this day his band is still sometimes credited as The Weakerthans (ex-Propaghandi), which can lead to a preconceived notion as to what they're *supposed* to sound like.
12. "I'm just a notch in your bedpost and you're just a line in this song". What song does this clever line come from?

Answer: "Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy

This is a very catchy song, and this is the line that will stick in your head.
13. "I could leave you well enough alone... better off than if I stayed". What song is this in?

Answer: "Choose the One who Loves you More" by Copeland

According to the band's website (www.thecopelandsite.com), Copeland uses the following criteria to judge whether or not they have a good song: "Strip away all the fluff. Does this song still speak the same way when performed with just a voice and a single piano or single guitar?" .... Amen.
14. "We were out of control so we played rock and roll, and threw the homework on the fire again". Another teen anthem... but which one?

Answer: "Whoa Man" by Flashlight Brown

Flashlight Brown's album, "My Degeneration", includes in the CD booklet the essential "steps" to follow to allow for degeneration. These steps include: "start a diet of bourbon and fries" and "sell out", to name a couple.
15. "I lay here owing my life to a stranger and I realize that empty words are not enough". What song is this?

Answer: "The Artist in the Ambulance" by Thrice

Thrice is one of the emocore bands that I've included in this quiz, rather than whiny Dashboard-esque bands. This song is pretty clearly about getting a second chance and making it count; on a personal note, it is one of my absolute favourite songs ever.
16. "Self destruct sequence, this station is non-operational". What song is this?

Answer: "One Armed Scissor" by At the Drive-In

This is perhaps their best known song, and their 2005 greatest hits anthology takes its title from this line ('This station is non-operational'). When At the Drive-In split up, the members went two ways - The Mars Volta and Sparta. These five guys are arguably the founding fathers of emocore.
17. "I am waiting for you to flee the scene, as if you held in your hand the smoking gun, and on the floor lay the one you said you loved". What is this song?

Answer: "Expo 86" by Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie is one of many bands prominently featured on the hit show "The O.C.". Star Adam Brody selects guest stars and soundtrack songs from some of his favourite bands. In his character's bedroom, there is even a Death Cab poster.
18. "Will someone please call a surgeon who can crack my ribs and repair this broken heart that you're deserting for better company? I can't accept that it's over". What poppy sing-along song is this?

Answer: "Nothing Better" by the Postal Service

The Postal Service is comprised of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (Strictly Ballroom; Figurine). They wrote and recorded the album by mailing each other CDs of ideas and demos - hence the name "The Postal Service".
19. "For what you do to me, baby there's no measure. I've taken everything and now I want to give it". What rockin' chick song is this?

Answer: "Love is Paranoid" by the Distillers

Brody Dale, former wife of Tim Armstrong of Rancid, is the singer of The Distillers. The singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is Karen O., who equally rocks.
20. "I heard she's great and her new boyfriend's lame. Well, she can go to hell, I'll never be the same". What bitter song is this?

Answer: "The Ex" by Billy Talent

The video for this song was filmed live at Capital Music Hall in Ottawa, Ontario. The band decided on a live video because they were too busy touring to create and film a concept video.
