Question 11 of 15
11. "MacArthur Park" is a very complex song for a pop song and is divided into four distinct movements. The second movement is beautifully scored and surprisingly poignant.

"There will be another song for me, for I will sing it.
There will be another dream for me, someone will bring it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The composer responsible for "MacArthur Park" wrote hit songs for Glen Campbell, the Fifth Dimension, Judy Collins, and others. He was only 22 when he wrote "MacArthur Park". Who is this award-winning, Songwriters' Hall of Fame composer?

Answer: Jim Webb

Jim Webb's list of hits is very long and includes "By the Time I get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", "Galveston", and "Up, Up, and Away (In My Beautiful Balloon)". He is a National Academy of Popular Music Songwriter's Hall of Fame inductee (1986) Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame inductee(1990), Oklahoma Hall of Fame inductee (1999), and received the National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement Award (1993). I saw him receive his honorary PhD in Music at Oklahoma City University in 2007.
2. Wikipedia says that there have been over 50 different recordings of "MacArthur Park", but the original is unquestionably the most well known. The singer was not known for being a singer, but instead was a classically trained actor. Who sang the original version?

Answer: Richard Harris

Richard Harris made his singing debut, such as it was, in the movie version of "Camelot" in the role of King Arthur (not Mac Arthur). Even after "Camelot", "MacArthur Park", five albums, and numerous singles, he was not known as much of a singer. His curious blend of speaking, singing, and sliding pitches made him an odd choice to record "MacArthur Park", an incredibly difficult piece.
3. Probably the second most well known version of this song was recorded by one of the great queens of disco in 1978. At 8 minutes and 40 seconds it was longer than the original version and therefore well suited for dancing (though not really for listening, in my opinion). Who did the disco version?

Answer: Donna Summer

Donna Summer started her career as a gospel singer and a backup singer. She had a string of monster hits during the Disco craze, earning 5 Grammy awards. She became stuck in the Disco mold for many years and her career suffered after the demise of disco by the early 1980s.

She has since returned mostly to her gospel roots, but can still be heard on "oldies stations". What a terrific voice!
4. One of the lesser known versions of "MacArthur Park" was recorded by a member of a group of country super stars, known as the Outlaws; which one?

Answer: Waylon Jennings

Waylon Jennings' version of "MacArthur Park" was released in 1969 and is a haunting, almost tortured, version of the song. It is much slower than the original and the use of lots of steel guitar makes it very mournful. Jennings omits the third movement of the song (the instrumental bridge) but due to the tempo, it is almost as long as the original.
5. Before we get into the lyrics, where is THE MacArthur Park about which the song is written?

Answer: Los Angeles

MacArthur Park was originally named "Westside Park" but was renamed for General Douglas MacArthur, the Commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific during WWII after the war
6. The song opens with "Spring was never waiting for us, girl. It ran one step ahead while we followed in____________ " In what did we follow Spring?

Answer: the dance

As with most of the lyrics to this song, the opening ones make very little sense but seem to mean something mystical.
7. If the opening line was not strange enough, the next couplet goes even further: "Between the parted pages and were pressed in love's hot fevered iron like _____________________________"

Answer: a striped pair of pants

Why a striped pair of pants? It was the 60s; why not blue jeans. Corduroy was also very big then, why not corduroy pants. The answer is obvious; you don't press blue jeans or corduroy. But why striped? Then again, why not?
8. Then comes the magnificent, often parodied, chorus: "MacArthurs Park is melting in the dark; all the sweet green icing flowing down". Wait, stop the music! Richard Harris is singing "MacArthurs Park" and the name of the song is "MacArthur Park". What happened?

Answer: Harris kept singing the lyric wrong and Webb could not correct him so he just let it go.

According to both Wikipedia and Songfacts.com, Webb tried several times to get Harris to stop using the possessive form of MacArthur but Harris either would not or refused to sing it right, so Webb let it drop. In fairness, it is easier to sing words that end in "s" than in "r" if you are going into another word.
9. OK... the park is melting in the dark and all the sweet green icing is flowing down (whatever the heck that means). Why is the icing flowing and the park melting? Weather is behind this mess.

Answer: it is raining

"Someone left the cake out in the rain. I don't think that I can take it, 'cause it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again! Oooooooooooh noooooooooo" By this time Richard Harris is in the stratosphere with his warbly falsetto voice. Oddly it works.
10. There is a second verse about "a yellow cotton dress", "birds like tender babies" and "old men playing__________________, 'neath the trees" What game are the old men playing 'neath the trees?

Answer: checkers

In Donna Summer's version the old men are playing "Chinese checkers" which actually flows a little smoother when sung.
11. "MacArthur Park" is a very complex song for a pop song and is divided into four distinct movements. The second movement is beautifully scored and surprisingly poignant. "There will be another song for me, for I will sing it. There will be another dream for me, someone will bring it. I will drink the wine while it is warm and never let you catch me looking at the sun. And after all the loves of my life, oh after all the loves of my life _____________________________" How does this segment of lines end?

Answer: You'll still be the one

The next five lines are among my favorite lyrics ever written:

I will take my life into my hands, and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes, and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire, and my passions flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life, oh, after all the loves of my life
I'll be looking at you
And wondering "why?"

I have no idea what it means, but it gives me goosebumps.
12. The third movement of "MacArthur Park" is sometimes referred to as the "scherzo". What does the term "scherzo" mean?

Answer: a fast, lively piece of music

Many symphonies and sonata have a scherzo as the third movement. "MacArthur Park" demonstrates Webb's musical training and discipline by including a scherzo as its third movement. The great composer and arranger, Hugo Montenegro arranged an excellent recording of this third movement as a stand-alone work.
13. After the frantic third movement, we are back on familiar ground. There is a dramatic crescendo, a massive key change, and here comes Richard Harris once again with the closing chorus. He is surrounded by a huge orchestra but stands his ground. As he screams the last two lines of "oh nooooooooooo. oh noooooooooooooooo" in a falsetto one usually associates with a group of singers known as "castrati" he is joined by what instruments, also at the top of their range?

Answer: an army of french horns

Webb orchestrated the french horns at the end of this dramatic song to be dramatic as only a french horn can be. The players execute perfect sliding notes in an incredibly mellow pitch.
14. In spite of some comments made in jest, I really do love this song, and if it comes on while I am driving, I will pull over, if possible to listen to it. Apparently, many other people agree with me, or at least agreed with me at one time. Despite its length and way-over-the-top nature, when "MacArthur Park" was released in 1968, at what spot did it top out on the American Billboard pop charts?

Answer: 2nd

The song did not hit the top spot on the Billboard charts, but it got to a very respectable #2 spot. Not bad for a song people love to hate by a guy that can't really sing.
15. There have been numerous parodies of this great song over the years. Weird Al Yankovic recorded one on his album "Alapolooza". What was it called?

Answer: Jurassic Park

Weird Al basically tells the plot line of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park to the melody of MacArthur Park. It is very funny, as much of Weird Al's work is.
