quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song "Nocturnal Pleasure" what are the Barbarians heads rocking with?

Answer: Rodents

"Barbarians prowl in shadows their heads rocking with rodents." It seems to be a pretty gruesome image. "Nocturnal Pleasure" is the sixth song on the album "Dead Ringer" which was released in the US in 1981. The entire album was written by Jim Stienman. "Nocturnal Pleasure" is a spoken word song that was performed on the album by Steinman.
2. What song do these lyrics come from? "We're the plug and they're the socket. Give us the juice and we'll go."

Answer: "In the Land of the Pigs, the Butcher is King"

"In the Land of the Pigs" is the sixth track on "Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose," which had a 2006 US release. Written by Jim Steinman, it is a dark and powerful anthem to feelings of helplessness. He originally wrote it as a demo for a musical version of "Batman." It was never released as a single.
3. In the spoken word intro for the song "You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth," what does the wolf have?

Answer: The red roses

"On a hot summer night would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?" Thus begins what Rolling Stone Magazine accurately described as "The coolest 30 seconds in rock." "You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth," subtitled "Hot Summer Night" is the second track off of the album "Bat Out of Hell." Released in the U.S.

In 1977, "Bat Out of Hell" is one of the best selling and in my opinion, generally best albums of all times.
4. In the song, "I Would do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" what is NOT one of the things Meat Loaf refuses to do?

Answer: Take off with her best friend

"I Would Do Anything For Love" was the first track off the much anticipated, 1993 US released album, "Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell." Written by Jim Steinman it won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo. It was also Mr Loaf's first US number one after over 20 years (at the time) in the business.
5. Fill in the blank on these Meat Loaf lyrics. "45 seconds of _______"

Answer: Ecstasy

"45 Seconds of Ecstasy" is both the title and fully half the lyrics of this song. It is the fourth track off of the "Welcome to the Neighborhood" album with vocals by Susan Wood. It is probably the shortest sung (as opposed to spoken word) song on any Meat Loaf album. If you know of a shorter one, don't hesitate to let me know.

It is a quick celebration of man's favorite activity. The album was released in the US in 1995.
6. In the last track on the album "Couldn't Have Said it Better," what does Meat Loaf wish you would stay?

Answer: Forever young

"May your heart always be joyful
May you song always be sung
And may you stay forever young"

Recorded by Meat Loaf in 2003, "Forever Young" is a beautiful song of hope for a child's future. It has special meaning for me. Written by Bob Dylan for his young son Jakob Dylan, it has been covered by such various artists as Diana Ross, The Pretenders, Susan Anton and Blake Shelton.
7. In the song "Wasted Youth," what color is the blood of the guitar?

Answer: Chuck Berry Red

Many people mistake "Wasted Youth" for "Everything Louder Than Everything Else" because the latter repeats the line "Wasted Youth is better by far than a wise and productive old age" over and over. 'Wasted Youth" is a spoken word song that acts as an introduction to "Everything Louder Than Everything Else." It's a fun little piece of nonsense.
8. In the song "Lawyers, Guns and Money, " in which city does Meat Loaf sing he is gambling?

Answer: Havana

"I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers guns and money
To get me out of this"

A scathing tirade against international politics, "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" was written and originally recorded by Warren Zevon. It was later covered by Hank Williams Jr. When Meat Loaf made it the seventh track on his 1999 (US) "Storytellers" album, all three of my favorite singers made the same song. It's also been covered by Rick Derringer, The Wallflowers and Widespread Panic.
9. In the song "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" there's a baseball game interlude. What is the last line the announcer speaks before "Stop right there" interrupts him?

Answer: Holy cow! I think he's gonna make it

"Paradise" probably has the best legs of any song Mr Loaf did. It is a party staple nearly 30 years after it was released. It could be considered a warning against rash promisess.
10. In "A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste," what two things are we leaving behind?

Answer: Tire tracks and broken hearts

"A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste" appears on "The Very Best of Meat Loaf," which was released in the US in 1998. Jim Steinman wrote the song originally for the play "Whistle Down the Wind." Although, the lyrics seem at first to be lamenting missed opportunities, I find it a more hopeful song about taking chances.
