Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), how many rudiments are there?

Answer: 40

There are fourty standard rudiments recognised by the Percussive Arts Society. They include roll rudiments, flam rudiments, drag rudiments, and paradiddle rudiments.
2. How many are included in the Standard American Drum Rudiments?

Answer: 26

There are 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments that are recognised by PAS. These were some of the first ones and still should be the first to be learned.
3. If R means Right, and L means left, what is the sticking of a single paradiddle?

Answer: RLRR

The single paradiddle is number 16 of PAS's list of rudiments. It is usually meant to be one of the first ones learned, due to its simplicity.
4. Which of these rolls are not included in the Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments?

Answer: Triple Stroke Roll

The Triple Stroke Roll is one of the most advanced roll rudiments and is usually not learned until late in lessons. The other three are included in the Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments.
5. How many times does a single stick strike the drum at one time on a single stroke roll?

Answer: 1

A single stroke roll is just as the name implies: it has single strokes. The single stroke roll masters the rebound stroke, which is being able to hit the drum over and over without making the sticks at the same time, or causing a double stroke.
6. When does a grace note hit when you play a flam?

Answer: Right before the beat

A common mistake with this rudiment is that people play the grace note at the same time as the note. This is called "popping" the flam and does not add anything to the note being played.
7. How many flam rudiments are there?

Answer: 11

There is: Flam, Flam Tap, Flam Accent, Flamicue, Pataflafla, Flam Paradiddle, Flam Para-diddle-diddle, Swiss army triplet, Inverted Flam Tap, Single Flamed Mill, and Flam Drag.
8. What paradiddle rudiment does not alternate hands when playing it over and over?

Answer: Para-diddle-diddle

Of all the paradiddle rudiments, the Para-diddle-diddle is the smoothest. It has two single strokes and two diddles, allowing it to begin on the same hand every time you play it.
9. Which of these is best played in 6/8 time?

Answer: Flam Accent

All of these are flam rudiments, but Flam Accent is the only one that gets three beats. The others are best played in simple meter.
10. Which of these is the easiest to play fast?

Answer: Swiss army triplet

The swiss has the basic sticking of the double stroke roll. The only thing that makes that rudiment easy is the ability to play it like a roll.
11. How many beats would it take to play a Triple Ratamacue?

Answer: 2

The Triple Ratamacue has two beats worth. It has three eighth notes and three sixteenth note triplet beats.
12. PAS advises you to play all rudiments how?

Answer: Open to Closed to Open

When they say Open, they mean slow, closed is fast. PAS believes that percussionists should play them at every speed.
13. How many times does a stick hit the drum on a multiple bounce roll?

Answer: It doesn't matter as long as it is smooth.

With the multiple bounce roll, your sticks bounce enough to keep a constant tone.
14. Which roll uses a half note?

Answer: Seventeen Stroke roll

The seventeen stroke roll uses a half note and a quarter note. The others use quarter, eigth notes, and sixteenth notes.
15. Which of these works on the triple stroke the best?

Answer: Flam Tap

The flam tap utilizes the triple stroke roll on both hands. If you separate your hands, you will be playing three strokes at a time.
16. What is another name for a drag?

Answer: Ruff

A ruff is the common term used for a drag. Most people refer to the drag as a drag tap.
17. Which of these is usually the most difficult to learn?

Answer: Inverted Flam Tap

The inverted flam tap tends to be the most difficult to play even for the most advanced players. The sticking is difficult to play and if a player is used to a flam tap, he will probably play the Inverted Flam Tap incorrectly.
18. Which of these is not a compound rudiment?

Answer: Flam

A compound rudiment is a rudiment that is made of other rudiments. The flam stands by itself.
19. How many single stroke roll rudiments are there?

Answer: 3

There are three single stroke roll rudiments. There is the single stroke roll, single stroke four, and single stroke seven.
20. What is the best way to get good at rudiments and drumming altogether?

Answer: Practice

No one has ever become a good drummer by just sitting around doing nothing. You know what they say, practice makes perfect!
