Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the top of the UK charts this week were a band enjoying their first major success with "Baby Come Back". Their name reflects the fact that they were one of the few racially integrated groups in the 60's charts. Who were they?

Answer: The Equals

"Baby Come Back" was originally released in 1966, shortly after Eddie Grant formed the band. It did not chart in the UK, but did well in Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands, so it was re-released in 1968 and stormed to the top of the chart.
2. At Number Two, its highest position, was O.C. Smith with a song containing the following lyrics: "All we really cared about was Momma's chicken dumplings, and a goodnight kiss before we went to bed". Name the song.

Answer: The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp

Hickory Holler's Tramp, the singer's mother, was deserted by her husband and turned to prostitution to support her fourteen children.
3. At Number Three on the UK charts, and later to get to Number One with "I Pretend", was a singer equally well known as a comedian and TV presenter. Who was he?

Answer: Des O'Connor

Des O'Connor's career in the UK charts began in 1967 and ended in 1986. During this time he had eight Top Thirty hits, including three in the Top Ten. Some were OK, some like "Dick-A-Dum-Dum" were awful!
4. At Number Four, with their only big hit, "Yesterday Has Gone", was an English band from Lincolnshire. Who were they?

Answer: Cupid's Inspiration

Cupid's Inspiration were short-lived. They had one more minor hit in 1970. Their bass player, Gordon Haskell, went on to become, briefly, a member of King Crimson.
5. At Number Five was one of those slightly wacky records that kept appearing in the 60's charts, "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy". The performers were not strictly a band, but a group of studio musicians. Under what name did they release the record?

Answer: Ohio Express

The single that was released was actually a studio demo track, and had no input from any of the Ohio Express touring band (ex- Sir Timothy and The Royals)
6. At Number Six was a song that would go on to top the UK charts in August, by Tommy James and The Shondells. Containing the lyrics "Hey, she give me love and I feel all right now", what was its two word title?

Answer: Mony Mony

Tommy James claims that he and Ritchie Cordell were in his New York apartment working on the song but struggling for a title. Taking a breather on the balcony he saw the illuminated initials on top of the Mutual Of New York building. He reckons that if he had looked the other way the song would have been called "Hotel Taft"!
7. At Number Seven was "MacArthur Park", written by Jimmy Webb, and one of the longest records to reach the UK Top Ten. It is also unusual since the singer sings the title incorrectly throughout the record. Who was the singer?

Answer: Richard Harris

At more than seven minutes "MacArthur Park" proved a programming challenge for 60's DJs!. Although the title is MacArthur Park, Richard Harris sings MacArthur's Park throughout.
8. At Number Eight, on its way to the top spot was a powerful record by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Containing the lyrics "You've been living like a little girl, in the middle of your little world", what was the title of the song?

Answer: Fire

Arthur Brown's stage act involved wearing a burning helmet on his head, which often led to mishaps and accidents. On one occasion members of the audience had to pour beer on his burning head to save him from serious injury.
9. At Number Nine, on their way downwards after two weeks at the top of the UK chart, were the Rolling Stones, with a song in which Mick Jagger sings "I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag". Name the song.

Answer: Jumpin' Jack Flash

The Jack in the title was apparently Keith Richards' gardener Jack Dyer, who he called Jumping Jack.
10. At Number Ten, nearly the last in a long line of hits for this band before they split up, was "My Name Is Jack". Who were the band?

Answer: Manfred Mann

The original lead singer, Paul Jones, had been replaced by Mike d'Abo in 1966, and in 1969 they all went their separate ways. Some of them reappeared in different groups over the years - Manfred Mann Chapter Three, The Manfreds, Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
