Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'd better start with 1960. The first Christmas number one of the decade was by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, but what was the song?

Answer: I Love You

Cliff Richard is possibly the most successful British pop artist ever.

*Useless information* Cliff Richard was the only artist to have a number one single in the UK in each of the five consecutive decades 1950s through to the 1990s. He has also had a number one selling single CD in the UK in the 2000s, but this was outsold by digital downloads. He is one of only two artists to have a single chart in the UK in each of the six decades (1950s - 2000s), the other artist being Elvis Presley.
2. Christmas 1968 had a number one song called 'Lily the Pink'. Who first sang this song?

Answer: The Scaffold

OK! So they are not the most well-known group in history with only three records reaching the top ten in the UK.

*Useless information* Mike McGear (one of the trio known as The Scaffold) was named at birth as Peter Michael McCartney. He is the younger brother of Paul McCartney of Beatles fame.
3. In what year did 'I Hear You Knocking' by Dave Edmunds reach number one in the UK on Christmas day?

Answer: 1970

'I Hear You Knocking' was written in 1955 by Dave Bartholomew and Pearl King. The original recording by Smiley Lewis reached number two on the Billboard 100.
4. Everybody who knows the 1970s remembers The Osmonds. The younger brother, Jimmy, had the Christmas hit in 1972 with 'Long Haired Lover from ___.'

Answer: Liverpool

'Little' Jimmy Osmond was the youngest member of the seventies sensations The Osmonds. In 1972 he was top of the charts for five weeks.

*Useless information* Jimmy Osmond was the youngest person to reach number one in the UK charts being only 9 years, 8 months old.
5. In 1973 Slade reached number one with 'Merry Xmas Everybody'. But was this the number one record on Christmas day in 1973?

Answer: Yes

Of course, it was number one for Christmas; it beat the other famous British Christmas standard 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' by Wizzard into fourth place.

*Useless information* 'Merry Xmas Everybody' stayed in the UK charts into February 1974. This track was re-released every year from 1981 through 1985, charting in the UK top 100 every time. It was also re-released between 2006-2009, reaching the top 40 on each occasion.
6. St Winifred's School Choir hit the number one spot in 1980 with 'There's No-one Quite Like Grandpa'.

Answer: False

NO! NO! NO! The title was 'There's No-one Quite Like GrandMA'. St Winifred's School Choir was (as the name suggests) a primary school choir from St Winifred's Roman Catholic Primary School, Stockport, UK. The children were aged between five and eleven years old.

*Useless information* Two of the children singing on the single have become well-known actresses in the UK. Sally Lindsay, who was eight years old at the time, has appeared in a number of British TV shows including 'Coronation Street', a UK soap opera. Jennifer Hennessey, who was ten years old at the time, has appeared in 'The Office' and 'Dr Who'.
7. Cliff Richard had a hit again in 1988. His number one for that year was 'Mistletoe and ___'. What is the missing word?

Answer: Wine

'Mistletoe and Wine' was originally written for the musical 'The Little Matchgirl' in 1976. The writers adapted the song, at Cliff Richard's insistence, to reflect a more 'religious' theme.

*Useless information* 'Mistletoe and Wine' was Cliff Richard's 99th single release and his 12th number one.
8. It's 1990 and guess who... Yes, it's Cliff Richard again! What was his number one song for Christmas this year?

Answer: Saviour's Day

Yes, Cliff Richard's 13th number one single was 'Saviour's Day'. It was also his third Christmas number one.
9. One group held the Christmas number one spot for three years running in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Any idea which girl-band this was?

Answer: The Spice Girls

The number one songs were: '2 Become 1' in 1996, 'Too Much' in 1997, and 'Goodbye' in 1998. All three of these singles hit the UK Christmas number one spot for The Spice Girls: Victoria Adams (Posh Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice).
10. The millennium number one is next. The year is 2000; who had the number one hit to see in the new year?

Answer: Bob the Builder (Can We Fix It)

Bob is an animated character from the UK series 'Bob the Builder'. Not much more to be said about this. Neil Morrissey was the singer on the record and also the voice of Bob.
