Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1980?

Answer: "There's No One Quite Like Grandma" by St Winifred's School Choir

John Lennon was a former member of one of Britain's most successful bands of the 60's The Beatles. He was shot and killed on December 8th 1980. Subsequently his earlier solo records, "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Woman" and "Imagine" were released and they all hit the Number One spot.

However, "(Just Like) Starting Over" was beaten to the post as the Christmas Number One by a song sung by a primary school choir, in honour of the Queen Mother's birthday.
2. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1981?

Answer: "Don't You Want Me?" by The Human League

This song was number one for 5 weeks. It was from their third and most successful album, "Dare". The Human League formed in the late 70's. Their first single to be released was "Being Boiled" in 1978.
3. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1982?

Answer: "Save Your Love" by Renee and Renato

The favourites for the Christmas number one this year was 'Shakin' Stevens'. But like in so many other years, a completely unknown act came along with what is usually described as a 'novelty record' and took the honours. In this particular year it was 'Renee and Renato', who managed a four-week stay at the top.

They followed it with "Just One More Kiss" the following February but just failed to secure a second hit.
4. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1983?

Answer: "Only You" by The Flying Pickets

"Only You", a cover of a song by Yazoo, was done acappella style(without music) and went straight to number 1 in the UK charts and was to remain there for five weeks over the Christmas of 1983.
5. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1984?

Answer: "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid

Number 1 for 5 weeks, this was a charity song done by a number of top UK artists that included Bob Geldof, Midge Ure, Culture Club, Wham! David Bowie, Duran Duran, and many more. It was for the victims of famine in Ethiopia. This was followed by one of the largest charity events ever. Simultaneous concerts were held on July 13th 1985- one at Wembley Stadium in the UK and one at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in the US.
6. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1985?

Answer: "Merry Christmas Everyone" by Shakin' Stevens

Shakin' Stevens aka Michael Barret was a huge star in the UK and had a string of hits in the early 80's with his rock and roll style. His first number one, "This 'Ole House", was in 1980.
7. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1986?

Answer: "Reet Petite" by Jackie Wilson

Jackie Wilson was born on June 9, 1934. He originally released "Reet Petite" in 1957 but it only got to number 6. It was realesed again a couple of years after his death in 1984 and this time it reached number 1 for a total of four weeks.
8. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1987?

Answer: "Always On My Mind" by The Pet Shop Boys

The Pet Shop Boys consisted of Neil Tenant and Chris Lowe. They had their first number 1 with "West End Girls" in 1986.
9. Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1988?

Answer: "Mistletoe and Wine" by Cliff Richard

What can I say about 'The Prince Of Pop'? He first burst on to the music scene in 1958 with "Move It". He has since had many hits in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000. He's had too many hits for me to list. Truly one superstar that has stood the test of time.
10. And finally, what was the Xmas number 1 on December the 25th, 1989?

Answer: "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid II

Another charity record; this time it contained artists such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Chris Rea, Matt Goss, and Marti Pellow. Did anyone notice that all the answers to the questions contained the no. 1 records that preceded and succeeded the Xmas record?
