Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alice's father, grandfather, and father-in-law all held the same profession. What were they?

Answer: Preachers

Biblical references and Christian themes are found throughout Alice's music, despite his Gothic image and drunken and debauched past. He is now sober and openly speaks of being a Christian, however the influence of the elder men in his life can be heard in his music from all phases of his 40 year rock career.
2. Alice was a top amateur celebrity in this sport. What sport?

Answer: Golf

In 2006 (at the age of 58!), Alice was ranked number 11 among celebrity musicians by "Golf Digest". He wrote the forward to the book "Golf For Dummies" and his autobiography was titled "Alice Cooper, Golf Monster" in which he told about the role golf played in helping him get sober and stay sober.
3. Which TV game-show was Alice a guest celebrity on?

Answer: Hollywood Squares

Alice, an admitted television addict, said that it was one of his greatest 'pop/art' moments because he had such a horrible reputation at the time (1974). Yet he showed himself to the American TV public as the most normal of rock stars.
4. Aside from the "business" of being Alice Cooper, Alice also owned a restaurant. What was it called?

Answer: Alice Cooperstown

"Where Jocks and Rock Meet" was the slogan used at Alice Cooperstown in downtown Phoenix, because it was a sports bar/rock museum restaurant. Featured menu items included: The Ryne Sandburger and Megadeath Meatloaf.
5. Alice is often considered, like one of his heroes Bela Lugosi, as the first rock-star to go public with his addiction and his need to get help. Alice did this in 1977 by committing himself into an asylum in New York. What album was inspired by his battle to get sober?

Answer: From the Inside

"From the Inside" is probably Alice's greatest 'story' album. It is loaded with great music, outrageous characters, and some of his most personal lyrics about his struggles, all based on his stay in an insane asylum in order to sober up.

Side note: Alice briefly relapsed, as most alcoholics do, in the early 1980s bottoming out hard in 1983. He was hospitalized again in order to save his life.
6. Which of the following celebrities did NOT appear on an Alice album?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Liza Minelli does background singing (along with the Pointer Sisters) on 1974's "Muscle Of Love". Elvira appears on 1991's "Hey Stoopid" saying 'He's such a psycho!' on "Feed My Frankenstein". Tommy Smothers can be heard on 1970's "Easy Action" saying 'You are the only censor. If you don't like what I say, you have a choice: you can turn me off'. The band then rips into "Lay Down And Die, Goodbye".

Alice did say on "Rockline" that when he was recording 2002's "Dragontown" he wanted to ask Paul McCartney (who was recording in the same studio) to do the Elvis voice on "Disgraceland". He didn't ask, however, and did the voice (quite ably, I might add) himself!
7. The most common trivia question about Alice is 'what is his real name?' Well, I won't ask that one. It has already been on "Jeopardy". It is Vincent Damon Furnier. However, whom was he named after?

Answer: Damon Runyon

Being from Boston myself, Johnny Damon has truly joined the dark side of the force by going to the Yanks! Much more possessed by evil than Damian.

Alice was named after Damon Runyon and makes mention of him in the song "The Department Of Youth".

Alice has in turn named his son, Dashiel, after another author, Dashiel Hammet.
Alice's first name, Vincent, is after an uncle.
8. For a man who 'died' nightly on the stage and made a living on gory rock theater and gruesome death images, Alice came close to dying in real life a few times. Once was from his drinking in 1983. What was another cause of one of Alice's near death experiences?

Answer: Perotinitis

Alice's appendix burst when he was a child, poisoning him seriously. He has a massive scar across his belly which is very visible in many photos and videos from the early '70s when he wore ripped and revealing clothes onstage.

He did stab himself onstage once with his sword, though.
9. Aside from rocking, writing, restaurateuring, and radioing, Alice also has done a bit of acting. With which Hollywood legend did Alice appear in a movie?

Answer: Mae West

Alice sang a song called "Next, Next" to Mae West in "Sextette" in 1978. Groucho was a personal friend and neighbor to Alice in Hollywood. Errol Flynn appears on the cover of "Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits" (as does Groucho). And James Stewart's Elwood P. Dowd from the movie Harvey is quoted on "From The Inside's" inner sleeve lyric sheet.
10. One of the following artists did NOT record an Alice Cooper cover song. Who is it?

Answer: Frank Sinatra recorded 'You And Me'

Although Sinatra did not make a recording of "You and Me", he did perform it live at the Hollywood Bowl in 1977, when it was a Top 40 hit. Alice met with Sinatra after the show when Frank famously said to Alice, "You keep writing them kid, and I'll keep singing them." Alas, it was the only song of Alice that Frank was to perform.

There are other tribute albums of Alice Cooper, including:
"Mutations" (Odd variations to Alice classics)
"Welcome To Our Nightmare" (A punk tribute)
"Humanary Stew" (A metal tribute)

I hope you enjoyed this quiz. I enjoyed making it. And the next time you hear "No More Mister Nice Guy", remember that the oddest thing about Alice is that he really is quite normal!
