Answer: Joan Osborne
"What if God was one of us?" is the question asked by Joan Osborne in her soul song titled "One of Us". Joan is an American singer and songwriter who has explored the genres of pop, R&B, soul and country. "One of Us" was on the 1995 album "Relish", and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The song was written by Eric Brazilian of the Hooters.
2. Funkytown

The disco hit "Funkytown" was released in 1979 on Lipps. Inc.'s debut album "Mouth to Mouth". The song was written by Steven Greenberg who was a member of the funk group Lipps, Inc. The band formed in 1979 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and included Greenberg, Cynthia Johnson, Margie Cox and Melanie Rosales.
3. Mickey

The earworm pop song "Mickey" was on the album "Word of Mouth", released in 1981. It was sung by dancer and choreographer Toni Basil, nee Antonia Christina Basilotta. She produced, directed and choreographed the video. In 2017, Basil sued both Disney and Viacom for the unauthorized use of the song on "South Park" and "RuPaul's Drag Race".

The English group Dexy's Midnight Runners released "Come On Eileen" in the UK in 1982 as a single from the album "Too-Rye-Ay". It was part of the new wave, pop and Celtic folk genres. The song was written by Kevin Rowland who was a member of Dexy's Midnight Runners, along with Helen O'Hara, Siobhan Fahey and Seb Shelton.
5. Maniac

Michael Sembello's energetic song "Maniac" was released in 1983 on the album "Bossa Nova Hotel". It appeared in the movie "Flashdance" in the memorable scene where Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) dances. "Maniac" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Male Vocal.
6. I'm Too Sexy

Right Said Fred is an English band formed in 1989 by brothers Fred and Richard Fairbass and including Robert Manzoli and Ray Weston. The song "I'm Too Sexy" appeared on the debut album of the same name in 1991. The dance pop tune had the distinction of spending the most weeks on the UK charts at number two without ever hitting number one.
It did, however, hit the top spot on the US charts.
7. At This Moment

The romantic ballad "At This Moment" was sung by Billy Vera and the Beaters, from their eponymous album, released in 1986. It was considered blue-eyed soul. When first released, the reaction to the song was mediocre. However, when it was performed on the TV sitcom "Family Ties" as a love song between Alex and Ellen (Michael J. Fox and his future wife Tracy Pollan), it became a number one hit.
8. Black Velvet

Sultry Canadian singer Alannah Myles released her eponymous album in 1989. The blues rock song "Black Velvet" was on the album. The lyrics were a reference to Elvis Presley, and the song became a big hit. Myles won both a Grammy and a Juno Award for the tune. She was also nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Video.
9. Nothing Compares 2U
Answer: Sinead O'Connor
Irish singer Sinead O'Connor recorded the Prince pop song "Nothing Compares 2U" on the 1990 album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". It was a hit, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Music Video. O'Connor and her bald head were a sensation, up until she appeared on "Saturday Night Live" on October 3, 1992, where she ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II.
10. Don't Worry, Be Happy
Answer: Bobby McFerrin
"Don't Worry, Be Happy" was another earworm song. It was from Bobby McFerrin's 1988 album "Simple Pleasures". It was the first 'a capella' song to hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Bobby McFerrin is an American jazz singer but, on the record, he adopts a Jamaican accent. In September 1988, when it hit number one, the song replaced Guns and Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine".
