Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The son of what 1950s rock icon had a U.S. Top 10 in 1980?

Answer: Johnny Burnette

Memphis native Rocky Burnette went to number eight with "Tired of Toein' the Line". Father Johnny was one of the pioneers of the rockabilly movement.
2. A number of country artists had brief pop success in 1981, but who placed highest?

Answer: Delbert McClinton

McClinton's "Giving It Up For Your Love" went to #8. Schneider's version of the Tony Martin and Elvis Presley classic "It's Now or Never" was a #14; Schneider was later known for Bo Duke from "The Dukes of Hazard" and Johnathan Kent from "Smallville." Sheppard was one of the top country artists of the 1970s and 1980s, but "I Loved 'Em Every One" only topped out at #37 on the pop charts.

The daughter of the Man in Black went to #22 with "Seven Year Ache".
3. What was the name of the artist who sang "I've Never Been to Me"?

Answer: Charlene

Charlene originally recorded the song in 1977, but went nowhere at #97. A 1982 re-release got the song to #3. By the time the song was a hit, Charlene was out of the music business and working in an East London sweet shop. The surprise hit later inspired numerous covers and Charlene to continue recording.
4. What group had a 1983 hit with "Whirly Girl"?

Answer: Oxo

The Miami new wave group had their only hit with a song about lead singer Ish Ledezma's wife. Oxo broke up the next year.
5. Scandal had a 1984 Top Five hit with "The Warrior".

Answer: False

Patty Smyth's group had their biggest hit go to number seven. The group's next two singles barely missed the Top Forty, as "Hands Tied" and "Beat of a Heart" stalled at #41. In 2010, a reformed Scandal, featuring two new members and three original members, released their first single in 26 years, "Hard for You to Love Me".
6. What television theme topped the charts in 1985?

Answer: "Miami Vice"

Czech keyboardist Jan Hammer went to the top with the theme from the classic Don Johnson crime drama, one of the few instrumentals to top the charts. The theme won two Grammy Awards and helped make the show's soundtrack one of the most successful in history.
7. From which state was the group behind 1986's "Rumours"?

Answer: California

The Berkeley group Timex Social Club went to #8. It was one of the first new jack swing acts to go mainstream and was a member of Run DMC's Raising Hell Tour.
8. While a number of one-hit wonders have topped the pop charts, Gregory Abbott's lone hit was not on VH1's list. What was that song?

Answer: Shake You Down

The former English professor out of University of California, Berkeley, and winner of Stanford's creative writing fellowship wrote and performed "Shake You Down", which earned Platinum status (one million plus sales in the US). Abbott released a number of other R&B and soul songs, but pop success eluded him.
9. What group had a top ten U.S. hit which featured Antonio Reid and Kenneth Edmonds?

Answer: The Deele

The Deele's one hit was the 1988 number ten "Two Occasions." Antonio "L.A." Reid and Ken "Babyface" Edmonds would later become successful songwriters.
10. Alias topped the U.S. charts with the power ballad "When I'm With You".

Answer: False

Although Toronto native and lead singer Freddi Curci did perform with Alias, it was his first group Sheriff who topped the charts with "When I'm With You", which was a hit four years after the group's 1985 break-up. Curci has the distinction of the longest note held in a pop song, at thirty seconds, measured by the University of Houston.

Alias had two U.S. hits: 1990 number two "More than Words Can Say" and 1991's "Waiting for Love", which went to number thirteen.
